OVERVIEW
After a weekend full of meeting new people, workshops, networking, I feel inspired. The workshops that I will be summarising are: Salsa for Political Change, Speaking for impact, Networking through effective communication and Leadership: a Stanford Story
POLITICAL CHANGE
This just sounded like a really interesting and, having met the instructor: Serjio the Interim Campus Life co-ordinator at Sierra College, I had to go. The class generally spoke about the routes of Salsa and how it stemmed from multiple cultures and actually started as an Afro-Cuban dance which was adopted by Latino's in New York which makes it what we all know today. We also had a lesson which was relaxing and an enjoyable break from the workshops ahead.
Effective Communication
"A supportive system of sharing information and services among individuals and groups"
Builds relationships
Mentioned how important it is to remember names by repeating them.
Be a savvy negotiator
When networking you need to ask yourself what they will say about you to others after you leave.
For Impact
This instructor emphasized and expressed an energetic and confident speaking voices. I disagreed with some of what he said though.
A few main ideas:
- People always want you to listen to them but do not do it themselves
- 3 C's of Delivery: Confidence, Conviction, Clarity
- Avoid: -filler words like Ah, Uhm
- I believe, I think, I suppose
