Porcupines evolved from hedgehogs, which evolved from Spinolestes xenarthrosus. A Spinolestes xenarthrosus is a rat-sized mammal, that relied more on sound rather than sight.

Porcupines are closely related to beavers, mice, rats, squirrels, and chipmunks.

Spinolestes xenarthrosus were the first mammals to be recorded, they roamed the Earth with the dinosaurs. They lived in tropical and temperate climates.

The new world porcupines developed their quills independently through convergent evolution.
