Hashimoto's Disease

Also known as chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis, Hashimoto's Disease is a conditon where your immune system attacks the small gland at the base of your neck, your thyroid.

So because antibodies are attacking your thyroid, it results in chronic inflammation.

What causes Hashimoto's Disease?

This disease is the result of your own body attacking your thyroid gland. However the cause for that is still unknown.

CAUSES

In fact, some scientists have so far assumed it can be due to a virus, bacterial infection, and even a genetic link.

Symptoms

Although some symptoms are obvious, you need a medical diagnosis, such as blood work, to actually confirm whether you have Hashimoto's Disease.

FACTORS

Although any person of any age can get Hashimoto's Disease, middle-aged people are more at risk. However, women are most likely to develop Hashimoto's Disease than men.

Another risk factor is having an autoimmune disease, for instance, arthritis can put you at risk.

TREATMENT

Synthetic levothyroxine is taken orally and is effective in restoring thyroid hormone levels back to normal. Medications are usually given by

Endocrinologista and Primary Care Providers.

How did you find out about the disease your daughter has?

"I found out about the disease through an annual checkup and her blood work."

"Yes, I noticed she was very moody and will sleep a lot more than usual and was always tired."

Before finding out your daughter has this disease, did you notice any obvious symptoms?

What was your initial reaction when you found out about her disease?

"I was upset since I myself have gone through a similar experience. I was also worried because I didn't know how she was gonna react to it."

"It's negatively impacted the both of us, mainly my daughter because of all the symptoms she goes through which causes her to be in a bad mood a lot. So it's hard to deal with all that."

"To always double check and make sure everything is as it should be when you get blood work done. And to be aware of what the person's going through."

"Somewhat. I knew about other thyroid diseases similar to this one because my mom and I had it."
