The Rogers Family

Frankie Pierce

1572

Thomas Rogers is born in Watford, Northampton, England to William and Elanor Rogers.

1597

Thomas married Alice Cosford at Watford on October 24.

They have six childeren together between 1598 and 1613:

Thomas (died 1), Richard (died 1), Joseph (died 76), John (died 85),

Elizabeth (died ?), and Margaret (died ?).

Some sources say Richard was "possibly" one of their children.

1617-ish

Thomas and his famliy moved to Lieden, Holland around this time.

The year they move is unsure and there is some discrepency.

Thomas was recorded as a camlet merchant; he sold asian fabrics made of camel hair or angora wool mixed with silk.

1620/21

Thomas and his oldest son Joseph journey on the Mayflower.

Thomas Rogers dies from the general sickness in the first winter in Plymouth at age 49.

The Rogers are Separatists and part of the Separatist Church.

1620's

1622 - Last mention of Alice Rogers on a poll tax;* she is thought to have died around this time.

1623 - Joseph gets 2 acres in the land division, 1 for him and 1 on behalf of his father.

1627 - Joseph is with William Bradford during the cattle division; Bradford likely took Joseph in after his father died.

*"Confusion had arisen related to the discovery by author Eugene Stratton of the listing of an "Elsgen Rogiers" in Leiden's 1622 poll tax records, where she is noted as the wife of Thomas Rogers. In her care were three of Thomas Rogers' children, who remained in Leiden after he departed on the Mayflower with his son Joseph. The children were listed as Jan Tomasz (John), Lysbeth (Elizabeth) and Grietgen (Margaret) Rogiers (Rogers). However, the name "Elsgen" is also the name used by Alice (née Carpenter), married to Separatist Edward Southworth, during their time in Leiden. Further, Alice Cosford Rogers is reported to have died shortly after the poll was taken on June 3, 1622 in Leiden. This, alongside the fact that the three youngest children listed with her were baptized in England, and the fact that their daughter Elizabeth's name while in Leiden was listed as "Lysbeth," point to the greater likelihood that "Elsgen" is Alice" (Stratton).

1629/30

Thomas's other children come over to Plymoth, marry and have children.

Bradford’s history states that Thomas Rogers’ other children came over, married and had many children. John Rogers has been identified, which means Elizabeth and Margaret Rogers likely came over with their brother, perhaps around 1629/30 (when some of the remaining family members in Leiden were brought over), however they have not yet been identified in Plymouth.

1636

Joseph operates a ferry on the Jones River charging a penny a person.

1639

John marries Anna Churchman on April 16.

1640's

1640 - Joseph and Jonh are granted 50 acres.

1647 - Joseph is appointed Lieutenant in Eastham.
