Indus Valley Civilization

  • The Indus Valley Civilization is one of the oldest known civilization existing in Pakistan and Northern India
  • It was a very advanced city, they traded with other known civilizations and they were known as very peaceful
  • The first document proof of yoga comes from a seal or carving from this civilization
  • This carving depicts a yogi sealed in the lotus position.

Vedic Period

  • The vedas were a paslm-like scripture that were written out in sanskrit.
  • The vedas accompaied rituals for everything like blessing a new baby and etc.
  • The four main "books" in the vedas were: Rg Veda, Sama Veda, Yajur Veda, Atharva Veda

  • Only priests or Brahmans were allowed to read or perform the vedas

Upanishads

  • The Upanishads are reffered to ask the "last chapters" of the vedic scriptures.
  • Concepts of mediation, karma, Pranayama, Brahman and Atman originate in the upanishas.
  • A major part of studing the upanishads was the renunication of society

  • In other parts of the world from Greece to China seeksers known as "rishis" rejected priestly influence of religion
  • They ventured out on their own to seek enlightment.
  • One rishi named Siddhartha Gautoma began his journey towards enlightment through meditation
  • He is later reffered to ask the Budhha

The Mahabharata(1000-500 BCE)

Mahabharata

  • The mahabharata are two epic works made up over 200,000 lines of verse
  • They depict epic battles between two groups of cousins, but within each poem are philosophical and devotional roots

The Bhagavad Gita

Bhagavad Gita

  • The Bhagavad Gita is one of the best known sections of the mahabharata
  • It tells the story of Arjuna and Krishna
  • Arjuna is leading his army into war but he realizes the people they are fighting are family
  • Arjuna asks his charioteer Krishna what he shoukd do
  • Krishna details the basic principles that become yoga and brought yoga back into safety
  • Krishna is the lord of protection, compassion, tenderness and yoga

The Yoga Sutras (200-200 CE)

Yoga Sutras

  • This written record of Raja Yoga is one of the most important yoga texts and begins the classical period of yoga
  • Patanjali, a sage from India recorded 196 sutras in sanskrit, diving them into four "padas"(foot)
  • In the second pada, the sadhana meaning practice or discipline Pada, Patanjali outline "eightlimbed yoga" also known as Ashtanga yoga.

Tantra

  • Tantra in sanskrit means "loom" or "weave"
  • This translarion helps explain the guiding philosophy of Tantra which is that everything is an expression of the divine
  • Tantra suggets that we immerse ourselves in the world around us in order to experience the divine.

Hatha Yoga 1100-1450 CE

Hatha Yoga

  • This practice comes from tantric buddhism
  • Hatha is a sanskrit word. Ha means "sun", Tha means "moon" when combined Hatha means force
  • As a practice it's about the union of opposites
  • This practice brings about the origins of the chakra root system
  • Hatha yoga starts to move out of India and spread across the east

Swami Vivekananda speaks at the first congress of world religions in Chicago

  • He speaks of yoga as a way of life and formally introduces the asana of yoga to the Western World
  • This launches the spread of yoga in the U.S. 1960s-present

  • The booming counterculture of the 1960s greatly increased the presence of yoga in the United States
  • Many forms, sometimes called styles of yoga were introduced this time(Ashtanga,Iyengar,Bikram,Vinyasa,Kundalini,Yih)
  • These disciplines are all rooted in the history and culture of Indian Traditions
