Samuel Slater born June 9,1768 died on April 21,1835. He brought industrial equipment form Britain to America in 1789. Samuel Slater made the first water powered cotton mill.

As an apprentice in England to Jedediah Strutt (partner of Richard Arkwright ) Slater gained through knowledge of cotton manufacturing. He immigrated to the US in 1789 attracted by the bounties offered. he was forced to keep his knowledge and skills a secret from the authorities, however, because at the time emigration of textile workers and the export of drawings of textile machinery, financial backing from the Rhode Island firm or almy and brown, and the assistant of skilled artisans , he versions of Arkwright's spinning and carding machinery and established the first successful cotton mill in the us (pawtucket, Rhode island, 1793). He subsequently established a number of other plants in New England and founded the town of Slatersville, Rhode Island.

Slater employed families, including children, to live and work at the site. he quickly attracted workers. In 1803, Slater and his brother built a mill and village they called Slatersville, also in Rhode Island. It included a large, modern mill, tenement houses for its workers, and its company store-- a small pocket of industrial, a ready made rural village. Slater's factory system became known as the Rhode island system. It was soon imitated and approved upon inventors like Frances Cabot Lowell through out New England. Slater died in 1835.
