Dolphins v.s Sharks

Why do people confuse dolphins and sharks?

Similarities

Topic

1. Countershading (Analogous structure)

2. Streamlined bodies (Analogous structure)

3. Fins (Analogous structure)

4. Habitat (Analogous adaptation)

1. Sharks and dolphins both have countershading.

Countershading is a physical characteristic where the bellies are lighter than the back. This specific feature helps organisms blend better in to the aquatic environment.

1

Both dolphin and sharks have developed a streamlined body separately.

2

Streamlined body help dolphins and sharks to reduce the water pressure towards and friction against their skin. Dolphins and sharks have developed this feature separately in an attempt to suit themselves to the marine environment.

Sharks and dolphins both have two pectoral fins on their sides and one dorsal fins on their backs.

3

Even though fins of dolphins and sharks eveolved separately, they are both adapted to swim better.

Sharks

Dolphins

Sharks and dolphins both live in the ocean.

With the adaptations of fins, tails, and streamlined body, sharks and dolphins live in various regions of the ocean by freely swimming.

Differences

Topic

1. Tail fin

2. Gills and Blow hole

3. Social structure

4. Vocal ability

Sharks have vertical tail fins and dolphins have horizontal tail fins

1

Sharks’ tail fins are vertical and they use them in a side-to-side motion to swim, while dolphins’ tails are horizontal and they use them in an up-and-down motion to swim.

Sharks

Dolphins

Sharks have gills on the side of their body while dolphins have a blowhole on the top of their head.

Due to this difference in the respiratory system, dolphins need to live where they can surface to breathe air while sharks spend their whole lives underwater

2

Sharks

Dolphins

Sharks are solitary creatures whereas dolphins live in groups called pods.

Sharks live alone for an entire lifetime but dolphins could have hundreds or thousands of individuals to travel or mate.

3

Sharks

Dolphins

Sharks are not able to vocalize, but dolphins are vocal.

Dolphins are able to communicate with each other through echolocation, for example clicking and whistling.
