Korean War Timeline

Event 1

N. Korea Invades S. Korea

Synopsis

- Took place on June 25th, 1950

- North Korea invaded South Korea, hoping to unite Korea under a communist government.

- The Northern Korean Soliders invaded South Korea in a coordinated general attack at several strategic points along the 38th parallel

- Invasion came as a surprise to American officals and troops

Event 2

UN Forces Land At Inchon

Synopsis

- Took place on September 15, 1950

- MacArthur's plan was to have UN forces make amphibious land at Inchon behind North Korea troops.

- As a result the plan worked well because the UN troops secured landing and regained ground

Event 3

N. Korean Forces pushed back across 38th parallel

Synopsis

- Took place on June 25, 1950

- The North Korean army crossed the 38th parallel in a full-scale invasion, destroying and pushing back any resistance in its path

- North Korean forces had pushed South Korea forces as far south as Pusan.

Event 4

PRC Send Forces over border into Korean

Synopsis

-Took place in October 1950

- People's Republic of China sends forces in order to aid North Korean allies

- Around 150,000 men were sent by China

Event 5

US- Led UN Forces Are Routed

Synopsis

-Took place on Nov 7- December 9, 1960

-The United Nations and U.S. adopted a rollback strategy to overthrow the North Korean Communist Regime, this was inspied by the succuess of the Inchon landing.

- Chinese surrounded 25,000 American troops

- Many Americans died tramatically, and the Chinese showed no mercy as they tortued soliders that were both alive and dead.

Event 6

PRC Forces Retake Seoul

Synopsis

- On December 31, 1950, the chinese 13th army attaced the Republic of Korea Army's 1st, 2nd, 5th, and 6th infantry divisions along the 38th parallel, breaching UN defenses at the Imjin River, Hanta River, and Gapyeong and Chuncheon in the process.

- The Chinease and Noth Korean foces were able to recapture seoul on January 4, 1951

Event 7

Truman Dismisses General MacArthur

Synopsis

-Took place on April 11, 1951

-President Truman relieved General MacArthur of his command in Korea.

- Created a storm of protest in the United States

Event 8

Peace Talks Stall

Synopsis

- Took place on July 10, 1951,

-The peace talks began between the U.N. and North Korea in the village of P’anmunjom

-Discussions continued slowly because of difficulties regarding demarcation of the border between North and South Korea

-These meetings continued for around 2 years until peace treay was finaly signed

Event 9

President Eisenhower is Elected

Synopsis

-Took place in Jan 1953

-Dwight Eisenhower elected president after campaigning to conclude the war.

-Nevertheless, communist leaders were fearfulthat this election might signal a hard line to continue the war.

Event 10

Stalin Dies

Synopsis

- Took place in March 5, 1953

-Joseph Stalin dies shifting Soviet’s position on the war

-Significantly contributed to the end of the Soviet Union

Event 11

Ceasefire Agreed

Synopsis

-Took place on July 23, 1953

- Signing of Armistice (US, Korea and China) ending the Korean War (No treaty signed between North and South Korea).

- The meetings lasted for two years before a cease-fire agreement was finally signed on July 27,1953, during the presidency of Dwight Eisenhower.
