THE RED PANDA

WHY DID I CHOOSE THIS SWEET ANIMAL?

CHARACTER

CURIOSITIES

EARS

The red panda has vertical ears of medium size. They are white in front and orange in the rear.

PAWS AND CLAWS

The red panda has robust, curved and

semi-retractable claws that allow it to grasp branches, leaves and fruit. Like the giant panda, it has in the fore legs a "false thumb", that is an extension of the bone of the wrist. The paws present thick black hair.

THE TAIL

It presents a long and thick tail, which has six alternate yellow-reddish and ochre rings. It provides its balance and helps it to camouflage among the trees covered with moss and lichens.

THE FUR

The fur acts as thermal insulation in surfaces covered by snow or ice and hides the odorous glands. It is soft, thick, rich in a reddish brown above and black below.

NOSE AND EYES

The red panda has dark brown eyes and a small black nose.

CHARACTER

In terms of character and behavior, the red panda is a solitary animal, which usually interacts with others of its species only during the breeding season.

It is an excellent climber, for this the red panda lives on the trees and nourishes also of fruit. Similarly, this animal has sedentary habits, so it spends most of the day sleeping and eating. That’s because it’s on a low-energy diet.

AND...

The red panda is called by the inhabitants of China "Fox of fire". Thanks to that nickname this beautiful animal has also become the symbol of Mozilla Firefox.

When sleeping, it rolls up the tail around the body or stretches also on a branch and leaves the legs dangling.

It is the only living representative of the Ailuridae family

The puppy stays about 3 months with its mother

The red panda lives up to 8-10 years

Males and females look the same

The red panda has a very debauched life: it sleeps by day and nourishes by night!

Very often, to drink, it uses a curious trick: it puts its paw in the water and then it licks it!

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THESE TERMS?

Most people grow up hearing about how a particular animal is an endangered species. Many times researching the animal brings up some information listing it as endangered, threatened, vulnerable or other terms related to it. The two most common descriptors, endangered and vulnerable, don't necessarily mean the same thing.

VULNERABLE

ENDANGERED

VULNERABLE

A Vulnerable species is one which has been categorized by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as likely to become endangered unless the circumstances threatening its survival and reproduction improve.

Examples: african elephant, giant panda, giant tortoise, hippopotamus...

ENDANGERED

An endangered species is a population of organisms which is facing a high risk of becoming extinct because it is either few in numbers, or threatened by changing environmental or predation parameters.

Examples: green turtle, mountain gorilla, sea lions, tiger, whale...

The red pandas are an endangered species, victims of deforestation. Their natural space is shrinking as more and more forests are being destroyed by deforestation and the spread of agriculture.

EVEN THE RED PANDA

HABITAT

The Red Panda is a species which lives in the temperate forests of the Himalayas, in an area between China (eastern border) and Nepal (western border) composed of mountain ranges and highlands. Its area includes Tibet, India, Bhutan, Burma and China.

HABITAT

The Red Panda lives in the mountain forests between the 2,200 and the 4,800 meters of altitude, zones characterized by few thermal changes with temperatures between the 10 and the 25 degrees. These places are humid even in summer. Here imposing oaks, firs, ferns, rhododendrons, orchids, but above all a lush blanket of bamboo grow.

IN WHICH TYPE OF FOREST?

NOURISHMENT

The food preferred by red pandas is the bamboo, the same as the giant panda. They also nourish of fruits, leaves, roots and insects.

WHAT DOES IT FEED ON?

WHY IS IT ENDANGERED?

There are many factors linked to the human presence, in relation to the disappearance of the red panda. Deforestation, as well as forest fires, have led to a drastic reduction of bamboo, the animal’s favorite food. In addition to hunting, another danger comes from the distemper virus: it is an extremely contagious infectious disease, which often affects canids and felines, characterized by paralysis of the nervous system.

HOW MANY LEFT?

It's an emergency for the red panda, a species native to the eastern Himalayas, of which may have remained between 2,500 and 10000 specimens in the world. Take care of them!

HOW TO SAVE IT?

  • Inform people about the imminent danger
  • Sentences for poachers
  • Taking part in travels and explorations (ecotourism)
  • Environmental associations

HOW TO SAVE IT?

Unfortunately large natural areas, habitats of endangered wild species, have now disappeared, however there is still much to defend and there are fortunately many people who dedicate their lives to the protection of nature.

Perhaps we can do little on our own, but if we act together we can make a difference.

The revolution begins with the supermarket, boycotting all companies that do not include environmental sustainability as a priority. Cases are numerous, we have to buy local products, study, read and travel.
