Canadian trade

Fishing

1608

John Cabot a italian explorer working for the british originally came to Canada looking for spices but found a abundance of fish. The fish was valuable and later reported his finding. Canada became a fishing spot and many fisherman would go to shore to dry there fish. Starting the aboriginal trade.

Aboriginal trade

1608

The fur trade started from the fishing industry in the early 16th century

The fisherman would catch cod from the banks off Newfoundland. They would dry the fish on shore and by doing so they started to create relations with the indigenous people.

The indigenous people were eager to get cloth and metal. The Cree and Assiniboine would form close relationships with the French and English travelers. They would trade furs for European goods.

The Fur Trade

In Europe there started to be a high demand for beaver pelts to make hats

Due to the high damned of beaver skins it allows Europeans to create trading posts. The dutch also started to trade near the Hudson starting revelry is this highly competitive trade of beaver skins. This caused the colonization of Canada and settler started to come to Canada.

Samuel de Champlain

1670

Samuel created the first permanent settlement in Canada. The establishment is where Montreal is now. The French would not trade with them and on may 2 1670 they created the governor and company of adventurers of England. Which traded in the Hudson bay and is now the Hudson bay company.

The Dutch

1674

The Dutch set base up in Canada for the fur trade and the West India company. They mostly did trade in what is now the United States. There was conflict but was resolves and a peace treaty was made in 1674. Trade in America was much more diverse then Canada who only traded with English and France.

American Protectionism

1816

In the year 1816 America created tariffs and this affected how trade progressed between the United States and Canada. This happened after the war of 1812 when the United States fought great Britain over there violations of united states maritime rights. This affected the cost of European goods in the United States.

Canada Formation

1867

In 1867 Canada became a country and branched away form being a british colony. After many conferences Canada was united on July 1 1867. With the unity of Canada trading was easier and was more widespread throughout the provinces

Canada Railways

1836

Canada's fist railway was built on July 25 1836 called the Champlain and St.Lawrence railroad. This changes the transportation in Canada and making trade much easier.

World War 1

1914-1919

World war one was great for the Canadian economy. Do to Canada's natural resources they went from exports bringing in 13 million to 36 million throughout the war. There were many jobs and The Canadian economy blossomed.

North American Free Trade Agreement

1993

The North American Free Trade Agreement was made between the US Canada and Mexico creating free trade between these 3 country's. This helps with trade and imports to Canada. This helps with price of items coming in form the US and Mexico and making consumer goods more affordable.

World War 2 and post WW2

1939

World War 2 greatly affected Canada. It improved the job accessibility in Canada and increased Canadian exports. Many families had 2 to 3 people in there household working increasing the household income. P

Post WW2 Canada built a public sector infrastructure designed to increase the growth of consumer demand. The goal was to build up the europeans stack market for canadian exports.

The Great Depression

1929

The American stack market crash in 1929 lead to millions people loosing there job. This was a world wide economic crisis and lead to declines in global trades.

Canada and China relationship

1970

Prime Minister Trudeau establishes diplomatic relations with china. Trade with China is expanding do to the potential for growth.

Canada & Korea free trade agreement

2015

On January 1 2015 the CKFTA came into affect, This agreement created thousands of jobs for canadians and increased exports to Korea by 32%.This also boasted Canada's economy by 1.7 billion dollars. This helped Canada Compete with Korea other trade partners.

the United States-Mexico-Canada agreement

2020

The USMCA agreement took place July 1 2020. This substituted for the NAFTA agreement. This benefits all the country involved and is created to become a well balanced corresponding trade supporting high payed jobs. This also was made to help built the North American economy.
