Big world
-Tim WINTON
Brotherhood
Duality of nature
“Harry leaned his head back against the chair and thought that if miles got lost if miles never came home, Harry's insides would go wrong and they might never come right again if Miles got lost“
“…he looked so young and small like no time had ever passed by since he was the baby in the room and Joe had told Miles to be nice to him and help Mum out.“
“This ocean could hold you down for as long as it liked, and Miles knew it“
“it still had a scar, a line where the bark had never grown back. And it was amazing that it had survived at all. They had hit it so hard.“
“Macholi went down and I can still hear the sweet melon sound of his head hitting the path. Macholi went to the district hospital and Biggie Boston began two weeks suspension”
”For a couple of hours we’re laughing and pointing and shoving and farting and then we settle down for a bit”
“ I can't believe we’ve done it. If either of us had let on to anybody these past couple of weeks we’d never have gone through with it; we’d have piked for sure. We’d be like all the other poor stranded failures who stayed in Angelus. But now we're on the road“
“When Biggie and Meg join me we stand there for a few moments before it dawns on us that the whole thing could blow at any moment and everything we own inside“
Tim Winton also used a similar illustration of the theme of brotherhood through the use of Biggie and the protagonist overcoming their own obstacles together also through the help of each other similarly relying on each other just like the Currens brothers did.

The difference between Past the shallows and Big world is that brotherhood in Big world is portrayed through the close friendship of two friends the protagonist and Biggie whilst Past the shallows, brotherhood is shown with the relationship of blood brothers.
Both texts have similarities in that they used nature to escape from their life/problems, In past the shallows focusing on Miles the ocean was an escape but also the root of his problem,

Big world is similar to where the protagonist and Biggie escape their problems through the car. The car follows a similar paradox as well by giving the protagonist a positive experience when they buy the car which acts as the beginning of a new better life
Though the relatable aspect we readers are more inclined to study these texts in the HSC. The emotions, literacy techniques and language concepts play a big role in why the texts are also a suitable pick for the HSC study.
Through both these texts there are excellent examples of paradoxes, anomalies and inconsistencies which are used to show the audience about the human experiences that are explored in these two prescribed texts.
