After Gus graduation, he tells his father that he has enlisted. His father is schocked and unhappy. Gus tells him not to worry about him because he is too tough and smart to be killed. Pa angry with Gus. Pa is actually afraid of losing him.

Gus rides to Sioux City with his friend. His father remains silent. Richard is unhappy working with his father because Pa is silent and bitter now. Richard confides in Angie about their father.

In July, he sends a new poem to Mr. Kilmer. In August, Richard receives Mr. Kilmer reply and poem " The Rogue Bouquet". Richard writes back and wants to mail his letter right away at the post office. He stops at Hannah's house. Hannah tells him that Mr. kilmer has died.

Richard and Pa are cleaning the barn. Gus comes and tells Pa that he joined the war
