The Portuguese had quite a substantial influence on Kongo. The Portuguese introduced Kongo to Christianity, as well as much of Western culture. This is highly significant due to the fact that Afonso I, the King of Kongo attempted to covert Kongo to a Catholic country by founding the Roman Catholic Church in Kongo, creating schools (resulting in the noble class being completly literate), Kongo's aristocracy being sanctioned Portuguese names, titles, in addition to cats of arms, and styles of dress. Kongo alslo began producing items, such as the cross with Saint Anthony of Padua, that have Christian and Europen influences. Afonso I, even sent one of his sons, Henrique Kinu a Mvemba to be trained as a priest.
In comparison to Portugal's influence on Kongo, Kongo had a much more minor influence on Portugal. Nontheless, Kongo became a considerate source for slaves for the Portuguese traders as well for the European powers. This created notable amounts of wealth for Portugal. Additionally, Kongo assisted with Ndongo's Kingdom by providing troops and by having further awareness on the area.
