Many schools around the world are getting students that do not learn English as their primary language. This can be challenging and even sometimes cause these children to be placed in special education services due to their cultural differences and dialects.
Children develop speech sounds from birth to 12 months. If the child is not developing these developmental milestones or at the pace expected then an examination will be completed to determine what may be the cause behind the speech delays.
For school aged children the impact of a language or communication disorder can be very challenging. It may be difficult to make friends, and socialize. Having a conversation with a peer can be challenging, which can lead these children to shy away from social interactions. A child with a stutter may be teased, and have difficulty interacting with their peers.
Mixed receptive-expressive language disorder: Difficulty understanding spoken language and speaking.
Expressive language disorder: Problems speaking
Speech-sound disorders: difficulty expressing words clearly.
Childhood-onset fluency disorder: Also known as a stutter.
Social communication disorder: difficulty with verbal and non verbal communication
Respiratory System: Gives the body the energy to begin speech.
Laryngeal System: makes acoustic vibrations from the air made by respiratory system.
Articulatory System: Convert these vibrations into sounds that we recognize as speech.
