Vimy Ridge

During WWI, in Northern France, Vimy Ridge was taken over by the Germans. Britain and France attempted to take over Vimy Ridge for 3 years but were unsuccessful. The task was handed over to the Canadians in which they were successful in one morning. This helped create a new and stronger sense of national identity in our country.

Residential Schools 1920

During the 1920s Indigenous kids were removed from their families to be taken to Residential schools, sadly conditions in these schools and the treatment of children was horrific. Students were abused and Canadians ignored these crimes against humanity.

Relief Camps 1932

Relief Camps

During The Great Depression, the Bennet Government created relief camps operated by the military to employ men. They were merely paid $0.20 a day for hard labour in poor conditions. Although work was voluntary, men would be arrested if they didn't "volunteer". I am ashamed that Canada didn't do anything more to help the people who were suffering.

Japanese Internment Camps 1942

During WWII, the Canadian Government established prison-like camps to house Japanese Canadians. They had to endure poor living conditions with no running water or electricity. Whatever they owned before was all taken by the government, including, homes, businesses, and personal belongings. They were discriminated against and treated like prisoners in their own country of birth simply because of their race. Canadians should be ashamed of themselves.

Suez Crisis

The Suez Canal is a waterway that controls 2/3 of the oil used by Europe, the Egyptions nationalized the canal which led to international conflict. This crisis nearly led to a nuclear war however Canada, more specifically Lester B. Pearson used their diplomatic clout to prevent such a confrontation and maintained good relations. Pearson won the Nobel Peace Prize, which significantly improved Canadian identity.
