Origins of the Cherokee People
Cherokee Today
The Cherokee people believed animals were the ones that created the earth as it is today
Water Beetle
Buzzard
Earth was made entirely of water before humans
Animals in Gälûñ’lätï were curious about what was underneath the water
Water Beetle, named Dâyuni’sï, went down to earth and dug up dirt beneath the seas
Eventually created a land mass the size of North America
After tying four stings to new land mass to keep in in the sky, a Buzzard was sent down to survey the land
Anytime his wings landed, valleys were formed and when they lifted the created mountains
The animals called the Buzzard back before it could make any more mountains and valleys
They got to earth, and it was so dark that they created the sun
Plants and Animals solidified there roles and characteristics in this time
