But when he had money, he spent on parties
Hari Singh had his unique style of making robbery.
He used to live with and work with a rich person at least for a month or so.
Once he gained his employer's confidence, he would rob him and run away.
This time it was Anil. He told a lie to Anil that he could cook for him.
Anil told him that he would not be able to pay him. Hari Singh agreed.
He went with Anil to his small room where he had to sleep in the balcony.
Hari Singh prepared horrible food.
Anil threw it to the street dogs.
But he didn't drive him out of his house.
It was pleasant working for Anil.
He made the tea in the morning and then would go for buying the day’s supplies, usually making a profit of about a rupee a day.
Hari Singh was happy and felt thankful.
He knew that once he could write like an educated man there would be no limit to what I could achieve.
Anil Assured him that he would teach him how to write whole sentences and to add numbers.
One month passed.
He was not able to do anything in his line of work.
He had the key of Anil's house
He had every opportunity to rob Anil.
But he couldn't rob him.
He was the most trusting person he had ever met.
but it’s difficult to rob a careless man
It’s easy to rob a greedy man.....
...because he can afford to be robbed
He told himself that he was a thief and he should act.
One evening Anil came home with a small bundle of notes, saying he had just sold a book to a publisher. At night, Hari Singh saw him tuck the money under the mattress.
Anil was asleep. Hari Singh slid his hand under the matress and stole the money. It was 600 rupees. He ran and reached Lucknow Station.
The train was about to leave. He could have easily caught the train but ......No!
He stopped there itself. The train had left the station.
He didn't know where to go.
The only person whom he knew well was Anil.
It was drizzling. He came out of the station and got wet.
He sat in the shelter the tower. It was midnight now.
He remembered Anil. What could have been his feelings
He remembered learning about the whole sentences.
If he becomes literate, there could be no limit to his success.
Thinking about Anil's goodness, he decided to return.
The thief says that according to his experience, upon being robbed
This story by Ruskin Bond revolves around the theme that human values and relations are important in life and they can thus change a person.
Hari Singh is a thief. Though he robbed Anil but couldn’t run away with his money as Anil was an honest and genuine man, and Hari did not want to hurt him.
Anil even educated Hari Singh. As a result, Hari Singh kept the money back. Hence, it can be said that even a person’s honesty can change an evil person.
Anil was a good man and his goodness changed the mind of a thief Hari. This shows that true values and kindness wins everyone’s heart, even a thief’s heart.
This story teaches us not to steal from others and to choose kindness over wrongdoing. It shows that even bad people can change for the better with the right circumstances, a guilty conscience, and forgiveness. The story also warns us not to break the trust others have in us, as once broken, it's hard to mend and can harm relationships. It reminds us that everyone has the choice to be good or bad, and being good is something to be proud of, as seen in the main character, Hari's journey.
The central character of the story is a thief. The whole story revolves around him and his perspective is presented in the lesson. His journey of evolution from a petty thief to a respectable man is full of lessons. The narrator reveals the clever findings of the victim, his entrapping them and finally how he manages to elope them and escape unhurt from the scene. It is likely that he would have done the same to Anil also. But the goodness and helping attitude
of Anil reforms Hari Singh, who has run away with money. However, he couldn’t bound Hari. He returns back to serve his master for his own betterment. Hence the title ‘The Thief’s Story’ is justified.
When Anil initially stated his inability to pay Hari Singh, Anil simply asked him if he can lend some food and feed Hari. Hari then realized that his target of robbing the man on the other side has been foiled, and he tried to mould the situation for his own benefit. Anil then agreed to feed him if he knew how to cook
Hari Singh was a thief and he had stolen Anil’s money. After the theft, he realised that he had robbed not only Anil but also himself of the chance of being literate and having a bright future. His conscience pricked him to think what all he could have got had he not done this. It was difficult for him to rob Anil but it was tougher for him not to back. He realised that he could not make tea, buy daily supplies and learn how to read and write then. His inner self did not agree to bypass this and forced him to return.
