Reflection on

Wellness

By: Roselene M.

What does wellness mean to you?

To me wellness means to be healthy and lead an overall healthy lifestyle in all 5 dimensions of health. It's important to note that wellness includes more that just physical health because if you're very physically healthy but lacking in the 4 other categories, you cannot be at your best or healthy overall.

What factors contribute to your overall wellness?

Physical: Nutrition, exercise, sleep, and hygiene

Emotional: Dealing with emotions and maintaining a positive attitude and happiness

Intellectual: developing and keeping your brain sharp by learning

Social: Managing and maintaining all different types of relationships in a healthy way

Spiritual: Understanding ourselves and the values that we choose to live by, finding our purpose, and practicing compassion

Personally, the factors that contribute to my overall wellness are: nutrition, hygiene, happiness, learning new things, maintaining relationships, being compassionate, and taking time to relax

What factors interfere with your overall wellness?

Physical: Poor nutrition, lack of exercise, lack of sleep, lack of hygiene, and using drugs and alcohol

Emotional: Not being able to deal with your emotions, being unhappy, and dealing with lots of stress

Intellectual: Solely doing activities that don't require you to think and work your brain / not learning anything outside of school

Social: Isolating yourself from others and not participating in any social interaction or being in a toxic relationship

Spiritual: Not taking time for yourself to relax, lacking compassion towards others and not taking time to reflect

Personally, the factors that interfere with my overall wellness are mostly physical including: lack of exercise, sleep, and stress,

How does wellness affect your relationships with others?

Wellness as a whole, including all its dimensions are related to one other. Relationships are affected by all the dimensions of wellness: physical, emotional, intellectual, social and spiritual. Personally, the factors of these dimensions that affect my relationships are: emotional state because your mood affects how you interact with others, physical and intellectual health contribute to the hobbies and activities you have in common with others which can influence who you hang out with, social wellness is essential to how you maintain healthy relationships, and finally, spiritual wellness can effect who you choose to surround yourself with depending on their morals and beliefs in contrast to yours.

What can you do in the future to try to maintain wellness?

In order for me to lead a healthy lifestyle and maintain wellness I would need to work on the dimensions of health that I need to improve on and maintain the areas that I am already doing well in. For example, to improve on the areas in which I am lacking, I need to increase my physical activity, improve my quality of sleep, as well as improving my overall spirituality.

In terms of maintaining the dimensions I am already doing well in, I need to keep up my nutrition and hygiene, keep learning new things, continue to maintain my relationships and make time to hang out with my friends, and keep being compassionate.
