Here's where UQ MD graduates matched the past two years.
SECURITY – While there are no guarantees, international graduates have a strong chance of securing an internship in Oz. In 2019, there were a handful of positions that were not filled. Australia has created a Junior Doctor Training Program private-hospital stream, which offers international grads first dibs on internships in rural and private hospitals. This opens up more opportunity for Canadian graduates!
MORE GENERALIST TRAINING – In Australia, med school graduates have more time to choose their specialty. The Australian junior doctor process involves a two-year general internship before choosing your specialty and starting your residency. Many Canadian grads value the extra time to refine their interests and gain additional experience before deciding their specialty.
PAY – Interns in Australia get paid more that most first-year residents in Canada, starting at roughly AUD $70,000!
Staying in Australia after you graduate may not be part of your plans. However, more and more, UQ is seeing its Canadian graduates stay in Australia. In the graduating class of 2019, 50 of the 57 Canadians stayed in Oz.
Here’s why.
GP RECOGNITION – Australian GP credentials are recognized by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. So, for those of you planning to become Australian GPs, that means no CARMS/residency process should you decide to return home!
LOVE – That’s right! After spending four years of med school in Oz—some of the most formative years of your life—it’s not hard to believe that you might fall in love with Australia, or with someone who calls Australia home.
