Mystique Lamb

Objective:

Observe my growth and success over the past four years

Agenda

Overview

  • Research Paper
  • Senior Project
  • Transition Progress
  • Acknowledgments

Objective

  • Demonstrate and explain my school work conducted at Amy Biehl through my research paper
  • Identify skills and habits from my work that are essential for my college or professional life

Academic Research

Civic Research

Topic

  • Investigated the social injustices that exist for young girls and women in STEM fields

Thesis

  • The perpetuation of gender inequality in STEM fields are due to the stereotypes and gender biases that exist in the educational system.

Research Paper

Discoveries

Excerpts

"From the mid-1900's to the beginning of the 21st century, the percentage of women in engineering rose from 1% to 11% (Jones 60). This lack of progression demonstrates the constant ridicule and shame towards women interested in STEM. It reflects the stagnant social attitude and shows how society is the biggest obstacle that women face when trying to achieve success. Women are continuously being set up to fail academically because of the mistreatment that is promoted."

"The amount of women in both the professional and educational world is insufficient for providing young female students with adequate role models. The lack of female presence suggests to students that it is not for females. This inherently causes female students to become dissuaded from pursuing STEM at an early age. "

Excerpts Continued

"One issue that was brought up by both McCarthy’s study and the interview with Ms. Garcia, was the use of humor in academia. In both situations, the use of humor tended to have a serious impact on the student’s experience in class. It is a tool utilized by professors to increase the retention of their student body, but it often results in offensive and degrading jokes towards the female population, offering a reflection of the poor social view of women."

Findings

  • Interviews are one of the best forms of research
  • The female population loves STEM, but there's a catch...
  • Motivation is determined by ones surroundings
  • The education system continues to be flawed until action happens
