DEPRESSION PSA by Miles Jackson

SUMMARY

Depression is a mental disorder plaguing hundreds of millions of people worldwide. Medically classified as Major Depressive Disorder, depression is defined as " a common but serious mood disorder that’s more than just a feeling of “being down in the dumps” or “blue” for a few days. It causes severe symptoms that affect how you feel, think, and handle daily activities, such as sleeping, eating, or working."

(Rebus Community, Ch. 54)

In order to be diagnosed with depression, the symptoms must be present for at least two weeks without ceasing.

TREATMENT

As the depression epidemic expands across the globe, a myriad of remedies have risen to meet it. Medications such as serotonin supplements and other atypical antidepressants can be bought over the counter at pharmacies worldwide. It can be argued, though that the simplest and most effective treatments have no price. These include physical affection, artistic therapy, cooking, meditation, and other everyday activities!

MISC.FACTS

MISCELLANEOUS FACTS

I. Technically speaking, depression is an umbrella term for a wide array of subtypes. These include persistent depressive disorder, postpartum depression, psychotic depression, seasonal affection disorder, and bipolar disorder.

II. Present symptoms of depression can vary from patient to patient, as no two cases are exactly alike. Where one patient may be visibly irritable, another may show constant signs of fatigue.

III. Risk factors of depression include:

  • Personal or family history of depression
  • Major life changes, trauma, or stress
  • Certain physical illnesses and medications

IV. 264 million people worldwide suffer from depression.

V. If a family member responds well to an antidepressant, it may work for you as well! Depression can indeed be genetic, and as such certain medicines can be used to treat multiple generations of a family.
