The Holocaust

January 30, 1933

1933

President Hindenburg appoints Adolf Hitler Chancellor of Germany.

Hitler's plan was highly liked by the German people.

He wanted to:

  • Get rid of politics
  • Make Germany powerful
  • Make Germany an unified one-party state

He began immediately by:

  • Expanding the Gestapo
  • Putting Hermann Goering in charge of a new security force
  • Getting rid of opposition to his party

1933-1935

  • Book burnings started happening

  • The first concentration camp was created in Dachau

  • Hitler declared himself as the Führer

  • Jews loose rights

  • They become required to wear the star of David

Hitler invades Poland

Jews living in Ghettos receive:

  • Poor living conditions
  • Disease
  • Limited food, water, and supplies

1939

Camps

1941-1942

Many more camps were created to completely destroy Jews.

Gassing started as a method to kill Jews.

The military was allowed to start killing resistors.

Rescue

1944-1945

  • Americans set survivors free

  • Death camps were evacuated

  • General Eisenhower photographed everything that happened

  • People were told to remember what happened and share their stories
