Mandating school uniforms is a violation of students’ rights to express their individuality. In a recent poll, nine out of ten teenagers confirmed they enjoy purchasing clothing that represents their interests, personalities, and beliefs (Laymen).

Method #1

Method #1

#1 Explain how the research supports your topic sentence and your thesis.

Stripping students of their privilege to select and wear clothing they enjoy undermines their uniqueness and sends the message that it’s better to blend in and follow the crowd than to stand out and be different.

Method #2

Method #2

Provide a hypothetical situation related to the fact from research. “If ...”

If all students were required to wear uniforms, their opportunities for expressing themselves visually would be severely limited.

Method #3

Method 3

Compare or contrast the research to a similar scenario or situation.

Prison inmates, prisoners of war, and oppressed characters in dystopian novels are forced to wear uniforms, which partially serve to strip them of their humanity and importance. Some students already compare schools to prisons; why would anyone want to encourage this mindset in academic environments?

Method #4

Task 4

Pose a rhetorical question.

What unstated messages are conveyed when adults tell teenagers they cannot select their own school wardrobe?

Method 5

Method 5

Present a problem and solution relationship.

Perhaps the real issue at hand is that school uniforms are a blanket punishment for behavioral issues only displayed by a small percentage of the student body. Instead of demanding all students wear uniforms, it would be more effective to intensify the consequences of violating the current dress code.

Method 6

Method 6

Identify a cause and effect scenario related to the research and topic.

Denying students of the opportunity to select their own wardrobe could

result in a negative school culture and climate as well as increased behavioral issues from students who feel their voices are being silenced.

Method 7

Counterclaim

Method 7

Introduce and refute counterarguments.

Advocates believe students would still have avenues for self-expression, such as through jewelry, shoes, hair cuts and colors, and other accessories. However, most of these suggestions are trivial and don’t apply to both genders.

Rebuttal

Method 8

Task 8

Agree or disagree with the research.

While this data may have been accurate for the school in the study, ten out of ten students at East Valley High School would prefer not to wear uniforms. Certainly, wearing khakis and a white polo every day is not an ideal form of self-expression.

Method 9

Task 9

State the credibility of the source (and why the source’s credibility makes a difference).

This survey was conducted by the Whitney M. Young Magnet High local school board, a group of seven adults who are truly interested in exploring the benefits and drawbacks of school uniform implementation. The results of this valid poll are clear: 90 percent of the student body is in opposition to the idea.

Method #10

Method #10

Respond to the research by explaining why and support the “why” with reasons.

Why would so many students oppose school uniforms? Teenagers are constantly teeter-tottering between childhood and adulthood. In so many ways, teens are ready to grow up, spread their wings, prove themselves, and earn their freedom. Yet, due to the fact that they are still minors, their desire to act like adults is generally suppressed by society’s rules and guidelines. Clothing is often one of the only areas high school students can control. Thus, when confronted with the idea that they may no longer be able to even select their own wardrobe, it’s natural for a sense of rebellion to surface.
