Throughout the 1500s and 1600s, many European countries began to establish colonies in North and South America. Some of these settlements survived but others did not.
What makes a settlement succeed?
What mistakes did the founders of these colonies make?
Students will draw on information from multiple print and digital sources, integrating information, to engineer a successful virtual colony.
Students will work across disciplines to design a colony within geographic, financial, and social contraints, recalling or gathering relevant information, to summarise the engineering process and explain how their virtual choices affected the virtual outcomes.
Your challenge is to build a successful settlement that survives in the face of multiple challenges. First, you will explore the choices colonists made that led to a colony’s success or failure. Then, you will apply your knowledge to design a colony. You will use a simulation to test how your settlement fares when faced with challenges.
