Geomorphic Processes

GEOMORPHIC PROCESSES

GEOMORPHIC PROCESSES

  • Our earth is constantly changing. Rocks, mountains, rivers and landforms change drastically over thousands year.

  • Geomorphic processes are the ways our earth

constantly changes shape.

There are FOUR types of Geomorphic Processes:

  • Erosion
  • Weathering
  • Deposition

EROSION

EROSION

Definition: the transportation of material that has been worn away.

Processes: weather creates friction as it passes rock’s surface, so that small bits of rock move with the wind, water or ice.

Example 1

  • The ocean waves crashing on a cliff

Example 2

Example 2

  • The wind wearing away at a rock and carrying small fragments like dust.

Example 1

  • The ocean waves crashing on a cliff

WEATHERING

WEATHERING

Temperature Change

Freeze Thaw

Definition: the physical or chemical breakdown of rocks.

Processes: Physical processes include temperature change, freeze thaw action, and organic action. Chemical weathering happens when acidic water dissolves rock (such as limestone)

Example 1

  • The Jenolan caves are an example of chemical weathering

Temperature Change

Process: When items heat up they expand and when they are cold they shrink. Likewise rock when left out in the elements undergo this transformation everyday. After prolonged shrinking and expansion the rock gives way and cracks.

Organic Action

Chemical

Freeze Thaw Action

Processes: when ice freezes it expands. When water freezes in the cracks of rocks, they make these cracks bigger. Over time the cracks and breaks in half.

Organic Action

Processes: When organic matter, like tree roots, grow through rocks causing them to crack.

Chemical Weathering

Chemical weathering happens when acidic water dissolves rock (such as limestone)

DEPOSITION

Deposition

Definition: the build up of eroded material in a location.

Processes: Water, wind or ice carries material that has been eroded. When it loses speed, it drops the material, creating layers of sediment.

Example 2

Example 1

Sand dunes in the desert are created by wind.

Example 2

Beaches are created by waves depositing sand.
