PERSUASIVE TECHNIQUES

Persuasive Techniques in Propaganda

Statistics

Repetition

Bandwagon

  • The use of facts and numbers to provide evidence and reason for a certain claim
  • This makes the writer seem more credible
  • A word, phrase, or quote used three or more times so the reader can remember it
  • Using repetition highlights importance, making the reader feel they need what is being advertised
  • Urges others to do something everyone is or is not doing
  • Uses peer pressure and social norms to persuade someone into doing something

Emotive Language

  • Language used to relate to the audience and evoke emotion from them
  • words such as: devestating, difficult, and fail can evoke sympathy from the reader.

Hitler's Speech

HITLER'S SPEECH

  • Hitler's procliamation of June 22, 1941 declaring war against the Soviet Union
  • The speech uses repetition, emotive language, and statistics to persuade German citizens to support the decision for war
  • Although Hitler does not need approval as he is dictator, the speech is his clarification for his actions
  • It is broadcasted on all radios for all German citizens to hear
  • The decision ended up being detrimental for Germany but Hitler's persuasive skills made it seem probable

STATISTIC

  • Hitler uses statistics such as dates, actions, and fact
  • He uses dates such as September 3, 1939, the date that the English declared war on Germany
  • He also uses actions taken against Germany such as The Treaty Of Versailles
  • Finally Germany uses facts such as other countries, especially England, showed no interest in Germany except when they gain power
  • By using these concrete statistics and facts Hitler seems more credible and his actions can be deemed necessary

EMOTIVE LANGUAGE

  • Throughout his entire speech Hitler uses emotive language
  • He uses words such as difficult, bitter, solemnly, etc
  • In the first line of his speech he states: "The hour has finally come for me, weighed down by heavy burdens and sentenced to remain silent for months, to speak openly."
  • This shows the audience that he is taking these actions not from want, but need for his country
  • Hitler uses these words that have a bad connotation make the audience feel sympathy towards him and show that he does not take this decision lightly

REPETITION

  • Hitler repeats certain phrases to get his point across to the German citizens listening to his speech
  • He repeatedly addresses the audience as "German Volk" and "National Socialists"
  • This shows that he is including them in his decision to declare war and that they are being given a reason when Hitler does not have to clarify to them
  • This makes the citizens feel connected to their ruler, ultimately manipulating them into agreeing with his actions
