PMU stands for Pregnant Mare Urine. Its a drug prescribed as a hormone replacement for women called premarin. As the meaning of the name states, the urine of pregnant horses is collected, but how and what are the conditions?
Mares, or female horses, are constantly bred over and over again, being forced to stand in standing stalls for approximately 6 months of their pregnancy.
As I stated before, the mares are bred constantly right after their foal is ripped away. when they cannot reproduce anymore or are too old, they are deemed as not desirable, because they develop a foul temper. this creates mass numbers of unwanted horses, giving them the undeniable fate of
being sent to slaughter
The foals have almost the worst deal in all of this. they are made just to be ripped from their mothers only a few short weeks after they're born, not even weaned from their mothers. they are either sold at an auction house or sent straight to slaughter. one orginization that saves foals is called Last Chance. its a foal adoption/rescue.
how many horses have been produced and thrown away? (yearly in america, canadia, and mexico alone)

Not only is it horrible conditions for the horses, its also not the best solution for females too. One study shows "In 2002, the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) study of more than 16,000 women using Prempro, was abruptly halted by the federal government after it concluded that HRT raises a woman’s risk of having a stroke by 41 percent, risk of suffering a heart attack by 29 percent, and risk of getting breast cancer by 26 percent."
With more breeding, that means more unnecissary slaughters of innocent lives. It also means more risks for females going through menopause. All to fix hotflashes.
consequences
Some believe there is major benifits to the drug, Premarin. it gives hormone therapy to women in the process of menopause, suffering from bone loss (from lack of estrogen in the body) and hotflashes. there may be some sidaffects like all drugs but the effects last normally up to 1-3 weeks.
importance
the importance of this drug is unclear because the cons outway the pros. the process of making this drug is hidden from the ads selling this product. these women dont even know theyre contributing to the death of thousands of horses each year.
seeing as this is a commercial drug, its protected and everything going on behind closed doors is hidden from the people who dont care to look. seeing these photos, it looks gruesome and disgusting but these animals live through it for 12 years if not more facing abuse and torture.
