Arthur Miller and His Struggles with HUAC

Why did HUAC want to speak to Arthur?

Why was the HUAC created?

Blacklisted During The Red Scare

The HUAC was created in 1938 to investigate alleged disloyalty and rebel activities on the part of private citzens, public employees, and organizations suspected of having Communist ties.

The HUAC wanted to speak to Arthur Miller in 1956 and 1957 and was subpoenaed by HUAC and was convicted of contempt of Congress for his refusal to identify writers believed to hold Communist sympathies.

During the Red Scare, Hollywood blacklisted media workers based off of alleged communist or subversive ties. In 1947, the HUAC started a investigation into Hollywood. Of the induviuals investigated, ten refused to testify. Known as the Hollywood 10, they were suspened without pay. Shortly after, Hollywood announced they would not hire subversive knowingly and the blacklist was born. Other media workers were also placed on the list, including Arthur Miller.
