Causes and effects of the word wog

why i chose this topic

why i chose this topic

A big part of being italian and living in Australia was growing up with being called wog. When i was in year 3 we were playing soccer on the ovals me and this other kid called Raj were left to get picked and Ryan Galliger said to my face "i don't want some stupid dirty wog slave" then he went and picked Raj. that was my first case of racism and it doesn't stop there. This affected me negatively and made me feel excluded. i wanted to pick my essay on this topic because i have a deep connection with the word.

origin

It's uncertain where the term wog came from. It was originally documented in 1929 by lexicographer F.C. Bowen, who defined wogs as lower-class babu shipping clerks on the Indian coast in his Sea Slang: a dictionary of the old-timer's phrases and epithets. According to many dictionaries, "wog" is derived from a black-face minstrel doll character from a children's book.

effects

In today's society the word wog is used frequently as either a racial slur or to greet friends or family. It is commonly used for southern Mediterranean people but can also rarely be used to describe a person of indian descent. When the word first came popular in England it was actually used for indians and arabs as well as south Mediterranean people. Being italian i don't really mind when people calling me a wog unless its in a derogatory way. Although some people don't like the word at all. For example my uncle hates when people say the word wog, as it holds a negative meaning . This word can be perceived differently, it can be used in a positive and negative manner.
