Final Project:

Interview with Datadog

Datadog

Datadog offers a monitoring and security platform for cloud applications. The platform helps businesses secure their systems, avoid downtime, and ensure customers are getting the best user experience.

The company was founded in 2010 in New York City by Olivier Pomel and Alexis Lê-Quôc. It is a rapidly expanding start-up that raised nearly $150 million of venture capital (Crunchbase) as of 2018.

Company Introduction

Why Datadog?

Why Datadog?

I will be a People Operations intern at Datadog this summer, so I thought this project would be the perfect opportunity to familiarize myself with the people and environment I will be interacting with for three months! The interview process with Datadog was extremely pleasant and motivated me to find out more about their work culture.

Datadog's Culture

I interviewed three Datadog employees–Ivette Vaca,

Jacqueline Kansao, and Samantha Shapiro–to gain insight into

the company's culture.

I chose to interview these three women in particular because of their varying positions within the company: Ivette works as a campus recruiter, Jacqueline works as an HR business partner, and Samantha works as a People Operations Coordinator.

Current

Culture

What was said about Datadog's culture:

Ivette Vaca

  • Work hard, play hard
  • Lots of company outings and events
  • When she first joined Datadog, she was pleasantly surprised that all of the new recruits were invited to a company beer night on their first night there

Jacqueline Kansao

Interviews

  • Culture of kindness and collaboration
  • Fast-paced environment
  • Openness to asking and receiving questions

Samantha Shapiro

  • Employee-centric culture
  • Performance feedback every six months
  • Very busy as of late due to the company's recent exponential growth in employees

Attributes I Liked

  • All three of them emphasized the employee-centric culture at Datadog. They all seemed genuinely happy to be working there and eager to tell me about specific instances that contributed to their satisfaction.

  • Datadog operates with a lateral hierarchy, meaning even as an intern, I will be heard and respected.

  • Tying in with the idea of being heard and respected as an intern, I also really value companies that have a culture of openness to asking and answering questions. I believe every company should foster a space that allows for questions to be asked without a fear of burdening or bothering others–essentially a "there's no wrong question" environment.

Suggestions

  • Have individual check-ins each quarter aside from performance reviews. Having performance reviews every six months is an effective way of collecting employees' thoughts and promoting a culture of employee involvement, and adding individual check-ins will streamline biannual performance reviews and make for a more predictable source of feedback. It will allow for feedback to be conveyed in a more timely fashion.

  • Implement the idea of feedforward into performance review practices. It will enhance their already positive company culture and engender a future-oriented perspective that complements their fast-paced start-up culture.
