The Battle of Carabobo, during the Venezuelan War of Independence.
The earliest evidence of civilization in Venezuela dates back to 15,000 years ago. Pre- Colombian Venezuela had around 1 million people and had many tribes that do not exist now, such as the Timoto- Cuica. The Timoto- Cuica tribe was the most advaced tribe at the time, was peaceful, and even had villages that were planned well. The Pre- Colombian era ended with the European conquest. Spain began colonizing Venezuela in 1522, and Germany and Peru briefly had small colonies in Venezuela. During this time, indigenous people of Venezuela were persecuted, enslaved, and killed. Simon Bolivar, his supporters, and the British mercenaries fought for years to liberate Venezuela and the surrounding countries, until "Little Venice" was free in 1821. However, wars and dictatorships lasted well into the 20th century. Venezuela found and began cultivating its oil in the early 1900s, but the wealth from the oil benefitted only the rulers. Dictators ruled until 1947, until Romulo Gallegos became the first "President of Caracas", to win fairly by popular vote, until he was overthrown by Romulo Batencourt. *romulo joke*. Between the years of 1947 and 1962, dictators ruled the country, until Raul Leoni, a fair and democratic president came into office. During Leoni's presidency, and many years after, the economy continued to prosper and living circumstances for citizens improved greatly. The country took a turn for the worst, in 1989, when oil prices dropped, and as oil is their main export, the country had an economic crisis full of riots. The president at the time, Carlos Perez, was imprisoned in 1993 for misuse of public funds. Caldera was then elected president, but was still facing a poor economy and was thought to be incapable of saving their economy. Hugo Chavez was elected in 1998. Chavez was president until his death in 2013, and was loved by millions. He was the 1st Venezuelan president to share the oil weath with all classes of people. Nicolas Maduro was elected in 2013, and has been regarded as an authortarian by many. The inflation and shortage of basic necessities began in 2013, and is estimated to last until at least 2019.

Compared to America, Venezuela has 3 times as many babies die in infancy, the average lifespan is 5 years shorter, and you are 14 times more likely to be murdered, largely because of the poverty, and gang violence. This is partly due to the extreme poverty in Venezuela, which has been amplified by their drastic inflation. Venezuela's poverty rate is estimated to be about 82% as of this year.
Inflation in Venezuela is estimated to be at 1500%
Venezuela is currently facing their highest inflation ever. To buy something like a carton of eggs would cost you $150, leaving many Venezuelans malnourished. The inflation is causing a lot of tension between the Venezuelan government and its citizens. Citizens feel as if President Maduro is becoming an authoritarian, as he is suppressing free elections and has censored media numerous times. The protests sparked by Maduro often lead to deaths because they often lead to riots. Although the beautiful country is rich in culture, years of hunger and the lack of opportunities for growth and development for its citizens, has led to their current economic, social, and health crisis of today.
