TEMPLE OF KUKULKAN

Chich'en Itza

Who is kukulkan?

When was the pyramid built?

According to legend, twice a year when the day and night are in balance, this pyramid dedicated to Kukulcan (or Quetzalcoatl), the feathered serpent god, is visited by its namesake.

What is it

Kukulcan was the all-powerful snake god worshipped by the Maya. While little information remains about the legends and mythology of Kukulcan we still have depictions of him as illustrated by the Maya

The Chichen Itza itself was built around 500 BC as the capital of the Maya Empire. But the Temple of Kukulkan was built by 800-900 CE, so 1,300 years later

According to legend, once a year when the day and the night are in balance the temple is visited by its namesake - the God Kukulkan. On the equinox, kukulkan came down and blessed the earth with a good harvest and good health and then entered sacred water to go to the underworld

The myths and legends around it

A layer of limestone about 5 meters thick provided the foundation for a temple before kukulkan, estimated being built 1,000 years before the pyramid we now know as the temple of kukulkan
