Cady Socialized
Socialization is connected to Mean Girls in many ways. Mean Girls provided an in depth case study on Cady. Cady started of by being homeschooled in a different country with an excluded environment. When she had to switch to a public school, it was very different for her. She had to learn all the new ways of socialzation in a school.
Cady learns many attituds, beliefs, values, and behaviors from her family. Her parents are very overprotective and treat her like a young child. There is mutual respect and trust between her and her parents.
Regina takes over her house hold. She is basically the boss of her house and everything revolves around her. Her mother even offers out alcohol, for if Cady wanted it in her drink. Also, Regina made her parents give up their room for her. Cady was in shock when she saw the way that reginas household is run.
The "Hidden Curriculum" is the informal and unofficial aspects of culture that children are taught in preparation for life. This includes things such as discipline, order, cooperation, and conformity. This doesnt necessarily mean an actual school subject, but "hidden" inside. Schools exhibit behaviors of this everyday, with social "norms" equated to cetain schools. Things like popularity, appearance, likability, and fitting in all comes into play. We see these behaviors everyday, and its emphazised even more in the film "Mean Girls".
Cady struggles with North Shore High's hidden cirriculm pretty harshly. None of the adult trust any of the students. There are many different peer groups and ech one has different rules. Some are equlisive and those ones are called cliques. A lot of the people there are not nice. There is also a social heirarchy where some of the cliques have more power than others. Overall, thse shcool was just not equal and Cady wasnt used to that.
In Mean Girls, there are many different peer groups and cliques. A peer group is composed of individuals of roughly the ssme age & interests. It gives kids the oppurtunity to think, feel, behave, and engage in activities that involve self expression. In the movie, Cady is apart of Reginas clique. Which is an exclusive group that is rare to join.
Each clique in North Shore High School had there own set of rules for eachother. The cafeteria, for example, was even seperated by peer groups. Those groups wouldn't interact but they all keep peace. To be a member of a peer gorup, conformity is necesarry. Sometimes your peer group can switch on you just like they did to Cady. She ended up wearing the wrong type of costume to a halloween party because, they decied not to tell her that it wasnt a scary costume type of party. It was more of a sexy, cute halloween costume party
Cady's experience with cliques was kind of crazy and all over the place. She wasnt sure how to go about it and what to do, it was very overwhelming. They had to give her a map of the cafeteria, and she could only sit with Reginas clique. Being apart of Reginas clique was a lot for Cady because she didnt really know what it meant. Eveyrthing that she did revolved around the clique and the poeple apart of it. It was hard for her to make new friends and to talk to other poeple. It was okay at times and she enjoyed being apart of it. In the end, the clique didnt work out in her favor.
Functionalist Perspective stesses the ways in which groups work together to create a stable society. There were many different ways that the cliques at North Shore maintained a stable society. One thing they would do is, they would sit seperately in groups at lunch. They also were introduced to everyone seperately. In North Shore, everyone is apart of their own cliques. The cliques are cloed only to peopole who dont fit in. Overall, North Shore Hgh School has many different ways and do many things in order to keep a stable society.
Social Conflict stresses they ways in which groups work to maintain the status quo. The acceptance of ones "group role/identity" helps to preserve the current system. In North Shore High School, the status quo was challenged. when the cliques challenge the status quo, a fight breaks out in the hallway. All thier roles are challenged and they have to apologize to everyone. Thoughout all the chaos, a better school environment emerges.
Symbolic Interactionism emphasizes how people study and interpret things that they are taught durng socialization. They interact with what they are taught and create thier own social self that comes about through their interpretation of what society teaches them. Cady had many different experinces when looking thorugh the symbolic interactionist persoevtve. fFor refernce, Cady's self concept was pretty good. She was very family oreiented and had a good relationship with her parents. She was very self confident, Cady is smart, good at math, nice, kind, friendly and more.
In addition, Cady also experiences how others judged her. Also known a the looking glass self, Cady begins to see the power in being attractive and it becomes critical to her appearance. In the perspective of Cady's significant others, their judgements are more imporatnt to her. Peers groups replace her family as the most important influence of her slef concept. Some other significant others include the plastics, Damien & Janice, and the mathletes. Role taking is also apart of symbolic interactions. Cady had to experience taking on the role of the plastics and that changes her. she also expericned becoming a normal human being after she had apoligized to everyone. The last symoblic interaction that Cady experienced was generalized others. She expericned this during the spring fling when she stood up infront of almost the whole school. She also expeinced this when she apologized and also when she won the state chamos for the mathletees.
