Northwest Territory

Map of the Northwest Territory

The Northwest Territiory was known as the Old Northwest. It is the land south of the Great Lakes, west of Pennsylvania, north of the Ohio River, and east of the Mississippi River. This area was explored by France first, and then British settlers came. The French and British fought over the land in the French and Indian war 1754-1763. The British won the war, but wouldn't let colonists settle past the Appalachian Mountains. This is one of the reasons that led to the American Revolution. Afterward, the Old Northwest was divided into states.
