What is digital forensics?(DF)

Scientific analysis of data contained

electronically, that can be used in the court of law.

Digital

Forensics

Challenges associated with DF

Although DF can be helpful, many challenges are faced when relying on it. Such as an inadequate chain of custody, an explosion of complexity, and whether the evidence can be proven legitimate.

Challenges

of DF

What is chain of custody? how is it preserved?

DF chain of

custody

Chain of custody is the collection, analysis and transfer of evidence. It is a key factor in ensuring the evidence is admissible.

This evidence is preserved by first responders who then take photographs/videos of the electronic device and whats on it, so that even if it is altered by an outside source the original evidence is still available.

What is Encryption?

Encryption is the act of securing digital information using mathematical techniques. This technique also comes with a password that is used to decrypt the data.

How to present DF

in court

DF that is presented has to be interpreted to fit the court room of the intellect of the average person. Often times forensic examiners over complicate the evidence and the jury wont be able to understand it.

Who and where were

his victims from? What crimes were present?

Victims

Cynthia Melton was an exotic dancer who offered lap dances. She was the victim of an attempted armed robery by CK on April 16, 2009 at a Holiday Inn Express in Rhode island.

Julia Brisman who offered massage services online, was found murdered on April 14, 2009 at the Copely Marriot in Boston.

Trisha Leffler was an escort who was gagged and robbed at gunpoint

What was his reason for killing?

Markoffs motive was to pay off his enormous gambling debts, which suggests that he was irresponsible with money.

Motive

What digital evidence

was used to convict him?

Digital evidence

Detectives were able to pull cell phone records on the towers, and that they were 15 minutes within the time of the murders.

Markoff also messaged these woman on email, and although it was a burner account the IP address of the account and IP of Markoffs matched.

How much time did markoff serve, and what was he charged with?

Unfortunately Markoff was never able to face judgement for his crimes, he committed suicide before he could go to trial.

Markoffs

Trial

How has DF changed in the last 30 years?

Evolution

of DF

The evolution of DF can be thanked to the boom in technology and advancement of Scientists and Detectives knowledge. Because of this technological advancement people who commit crimes can be found, and face the punishment that they deserve. Without digital forensics it would be more difficult to find these criminals, Markoff is a perfect example because without them finding the cell records, he couldve hurt or killed multiple more people before being caught.
