The golden rule is in the Gospel of Matthew 'Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. ' it is important because it teaches the lesson than everyone should lead a moral life every second of every day.
Where did it originate?
The golden rule is said to have originated by Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew 7:12. it is also in Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, which is a compeletion of Jesus' sayings.
Although in the Bible jesus was the creator of the golden rule some say that it was created centuries before Jesus was born by Confucius who was a chinese poet. Some even go as far as to say the concept was created in ancient Egypt.
The golden rule is followed by the words major religions such as Judasim, Hinduism, Toaism and even some Athiests follow it. most of the worlds people follow the golden rule as it is an important rule taught to many.
I personally thing Jesus followed the golden rule throughout his life, he cared for others without the want for reward. The golden rule was something invented by Jesus and he would have been somebody who refused to be the hypocrite and would have lived up to what he said so yes, Jesus must have followed the golden rule.

The golden rule has many different variations, in Judasim it is Love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD
In hinduism it is “This is the sum of duty; do naught unto others what you would not have them do unto you.” Meanwhile Bhudism's golden rule is “Treat not others in ways that you yourself would find hurtful.”
No matter the message the Golden Rule always has the same message.
The main message. It is the same thing for all religions, the words might change but the message sent out means the same thing, to "treat others the way you want to be treated" I suppose its called the golden rule because this message is taught in every religion to exist.
The golden rule can help the hummanity in many ways, lets say everybody in the classroom followed it, or maybe just half the class followed it, it would make the class a safe space. Now if the whole world followed the golden rule things like world hunger would never exist but clearly that can't happen because its not always easy to follow the golden rule.
I don't think I always follow the golden rule as its not always easy to treat others safely when in your brain its always you whos more important. So no I do not live the golden rule but I do try to.
