“Special issues arise in families that have a mix of documented and undocumented children—a rather common occurrence. In such families, unique dynamics tend to develop. In some cases, the undocumented child may unconsciously become the family’s scapegoat while the documented child may occupy the role of “the golden child”. This imbalance creates tensions and resentments, as well as guilt and shame” (35).

“THE VARIETIES OF IMMIGRANT EXPERIENCE.”

This text is written by Carola Suaz-Oroza and Marcelo M. Suaz-Orozco. This text is about the different types of immigrants. The two types of immigrants it is about is immigrants that come to seek opertunitues in America and refugees who come to America for safety and comofrt. These two source focus on the the psychological aspects that undocumented citizens go through.

Psychology

“Extended family is very important in the Mexican culture. Thus Marina’s parents made a big sacrifice by leaving their own parents and other family members in Mexico so their children could have a better future in the United States…Perhaps the void created by their missing extended family is the reason Marina’s parents place extra importance on keeping the family together in Arizona. It appears that this sense of loss has magnified the importance of the nuclear family for them.” (125)

This text is written by Castro-Salazar, Ricardo, and Carl Bagley. These authors write about multiple different stories about educated students who are undocumented citizens. All of these different stories revolve around the undocumented citizen’s journey through education.

"Caught between Two Worlds: Understanding the Cultural Integration Process."

Discrimination

These two sources talk about discrimination towards undocumented citizen. They also talk about how the discrimination that takes place is partly because of stereotyping.

“Who is this “we the people” that first graders celebrate in song? what are the tied that bind us, the ideals that unite us as Americans, and in what ways do new generations of American contribute to our collective identity?” (51).

“We the People.”

This text is written by Constance A. Flanagan. This text addresses the question of what makes and American and America. Flanagan is trying to figure out what the key aspect of a person that makes them considered an American. In order to answer this question, Flanagan interviews a diverse sample of students between the ages of eleven and eighteen.

“The findings confirm that when these empirical issues are addressed stereotypes have a much larger relative impact than has been previously reported. The analysis of preferences regarding immigration from Latin America suggest that stereotypes of Hispanics have a larger impact that economic or cultural anxieties and the mediation test confirms that more than half of the actual impact of stereotypes is not being observed because it is working through those other variables.” (1325)

This text is written by Lingyu Lu and Sean Nicholson-Crotty. These authors write about how stereotypes of Hispanic people might have an impact on people’s view of immigration. This text also goes through the statistics between stereotypes and other views.

These three texts address current issues. It is important to keep in mind that this is a current issue, and these texts help us see how undocumented citizens play a part in current issues in different ways.

Inside”

“But as entire states were shutting down, life inside Irwin, which is run by a Louisiana based private company called LaSalle Corrections, had scarcely changes, except for some additional cleaning and temperature checks for new arrivals. ‘We are depending totally on the authorities here and what we do,’ Barahona told me. ‘and they are not doing much’”

This article is all about an ICE detention center and how the people inside have been treated. It begins with talking about how little they get paid for working, but then it addresses a more recent issue; the Corona-virus. As people being held in the detention centers, and workers begin to get the virus a protest begins.

“They’re immigrants. Their kids are US

citizens. And they’re scared”

“We have a 14-year-old son that is brown-skinned, although my husband is Italian American. My husband and I do not feel safe letting our son ride a bike alone in our neighborhood, in case someone wants to call the cops on him. So, we are hyper vigilant,” she says. “when my kids are riding their bicycles where I can’t see them, in case the cops stop them, in case the cops stop them, I tell “say your name and address, and say you want your parents because you’re minors. Don’t answer any question.’ I make them repeat that every day, every time they go out.”

This news article is about a family and the feelings that they have on President Trump and his racist statements, along with his rash actions against undocumented citizens. This article goes into details of families worries and anxiety’s since Trump has gained office. These are various stories told by different families.

“Flyers ‘meant to intimidate immigrants’ posted in Queens”

“What this is trying to do is turn citizens into vigilantes, encouraging them to report people to ICE without knowing whether they are documented or not” Van Bramer said. “This is a borough of immigrants, a neighborhood of immigrants and I don’t want any of them, even those that are undocumented to be afraid to walk though these streets.”

This news article addresses an incident that took place in New York. This incident was someone (they think that it was a white supremacist group called Vanguard America) was posting flyers throughout the city telling American citizens to report any undocumented citizens to ICE. After the incident people posted flyers in support of immigrants, to help take away the fear and division that the prior flyer had created.
