Fiery Cross Reef, also known as "Northwest Investigator reef" is a occupied reef made by SAC/ PRC as a part of a Hainan province and Spratly islands, the reef was made because in 1987 they were asked to build a UNESCO marine observation to communicate/trade with the Vietnam, a year after the PRC decided to start reclamation on the sea beds and make a environment there for military facilities
The Fiery Cross Reef involves simply filling the area with large amounts of heavy rock or cement, then filling with clay/soil/sand until the desired height is reached, this is what the Fiery Cross Reef used to be but then got changed into a artificial island.
Land reclamation is the process of turning disturbed land into its former or other desired state, this development often takes place in forest areas, re-establishing healthy, resilient forest ecosystems is an important part of land reclamation and landscape restoration.
One of the impacts of having a land reclamation is it's environmental impact, although we don't exactly know the environmental impacts you can make a very logical case that there was some impacts, for example, land reclamation has been proven to turn water acidic, which will lower the oxygen levels in the water, making organisms around that area die. ("Well how does land reclamation have to do with the Fiery Cross Reef? The Fiery Cross Reef was made by land reclamation so it is linked, like I said this is just a logical answer of a partly unknown question) Another impact the fiery cross reef has caused on the environment is how they built it, land reclamation has been proven to make storms surges and e.c.t, which could effect humans and animals. P.S I know that the land is now artificial but the damage it (probably) did cannot be reversed.
(DISCLAIMER, I know that this doesn't have to do with what l'm going to talk about isn't about the Fiery Cross Reef but more about how China hides info even though it's dangerous, there are a lot of examples but the main one I want to talk about is China's infrastructure debt, in case you don't know what a infrastructure is it is basically a structure used for the society and enterprises, so basically China is in debt for more than 2 trillion CAD from making infrastructure, although you may see on the internet "China unique structures" and how cool it is but the reason it has all of those buildings are because China aren't the smartest with their money, time will go on and if they keep on making structures they will probably turn into a very poor economic country
The social impact of the Fiery Cross Reef that can happen (since nothing has really happened yet) can be about what is inside of it, although you may see "Fiery Cross reef making new ____" that's not really what this artificial island is about, the Fiery Cross Reef is basically a air base with military installments in it and now that you know that I think you would understand my answer more, what I think may happen is that other countries close to China are scared that this island can be used to plot war and may start to distrust China.
This is going to be a very short answer because it pretty obvious, in my opinion I think it is for China but for most countries it isn't, China is in a very tight situation (even though it may not seem like it) and I think they should sit back until they have the right amount of money for artificial islands. What do you think?
The political impact of the Fiery Cross Reef is unknown because this is more governmental than actual public info, so we have to make assumptions about the impact, the first/main impact is that since the fiery cross reef is located in the Spratly islands it is not China's actual land, for anyone who doesn't where the Spratly islands is, it is basically located in Malaysia and the Philippines so technically it is not China's land so basically China went to another country and and build there own military on it. However we haven't really seen any commotion but I think it has caused some (mostly because of China's way of hiding stuff)
The economical impact of the Fiery Cross Reef is quite clear (unlike most of these answers) so I think it will make sense if I say like this, in my opinion I don't think China needs a whole artificial island just to put military installments in it, not only does this raise suspiciousness (like I talked about) it is just a downright waste of money, this whole island cost 14.3 billion CAD and I personally think that they can use that to help the famine in this country and e.c.t, this in my opinion was a bad investment and this money could be used to make peoples lives better instead of using it on a airbase that you probably won't need.
