Important Battles

Some important battles at the time were the Battle of Ecnomus, which was the first Punic War, the attack that Carthage made into Iberian on the second Punic War, and lastly the treaty Carthage broke that started the third Punic War.

First Punic War Begins

1st Punic War

The first Punic War lasted from 264-241 B.C. The first Punic War first began when Rome didn't want Carthage to become to powerful, so they attacked Carthage in Sicily.

1st Punic War Battle

Battle of Ecnomus

In the battle of Ecnomus Rome invaded Sicily and North Africa, the same year Carthage got defeated.

2nd Punic War Begins

2nd Punic War

The 2nd Punic War first began when Hannibal, the brilliant leader of Carthaginian Army, marched his troops into Ebro River, which is protected by Rome. They declared war on Rome, because aggression between Rome who won the first Punic War, and they were mad and wanted to defeat Rome.

Carthage Expands

Carthage Expands into Iberia

Due to aggression, Carthage moves it's army into the Iberian Peninsula. Carthage moves into the alps where they loose half of there troops and war elephants. After a swift victory where the Romans had invaded the Gauls they marched trough Rome. However Rome made a surprise attack on the north african city that was part of Carthage, Zemn. Carthage's army moved to defend, but the Romans defeated them in a swift maneuver.

Carthage eventually lost, by losing 50,000 citizens that were turned into slaves to work for Rome, and another disadvantage to Carthage was that Rome made Carthage give up its navy and territory, as well as their land.

After the second Punic War the Romans were afraid of Carthage becoming a superpower again. In response the Romans enslaved 50,000 Carthage citizens and destroyed the entire empire.

When Hannibal Takes Command

During the second Punic War Hannibal became leader. He became leader because while the decades passed Rome conquered Corsica and Sardinia, but Carthage was able to establish a new influence in Spain under the great leadership of general Hamilcar Barca, and later his son in law Hasdrubal, who died, made his younger son Hannibal swear a blood oath against Rome. When Hannibal swore the blood oath he was only a young boy.

During the third Punic War Carthage was threatened that they would become powerful again by Rome. Rome also made Carthage pay large amounts of silver. Rome made Carthage give up its navy and their territory, and then Rome decided to attacked Carthage. During the battle Carthage lost about 50,000 Carthage citizens that were sold into slavery.
