Background

What is your idea of a successful life? Is it becoming rich or famous or having a family? And how to you plan on achieving success? Well Malcolm Gladwell, a writer and journalist for ¨The New Yorker¨ believed that to become successful it did not just come from nothing. That you had to work hard for a long time in order to achieve success. He also believed there was no such thing as ¨rags to riches¨ meaning someone cant just become rich/successful. And if and if for some reason something of the sort did occur that society had already paved a path for them.

Thesis

To an extent Gladwell´s claims of you can´t rise from nothing and that there is no such thing as ¨rags to riches¨ could be proven true, but there are certain factors that could cause them to be false.

Thesis

Evidence

1. Generally, for a person to become rich and successful a lot of hard work and dedication goes into that stemming from opportunity which supports Gladwell´s claims.

2. There is potential for a ¨rags to riches story¨ to come true but there is also a possibility that their success had hard work that went into it.

Evidence

Point 1

Steve Jobs, the creator of apple extensively worked for many years along with the help of others to get Apple to where it is today. He had the opportunity of creating apple and made it a billion dollar company.

Point 1

Point 2.

¨Rags to riches¨ stories are tricky because of the lottery. Someone could magically just win millions at the scratch of a 3 dollar ticket. But generally people who win big will have been playing for a long time before they win. But contradicting Gladwell´s beliefs anyone who has never played and buys a ticket could win millions thus instantly becoming successful.

Point 2

¨There is no way someone will win the lottery the first time you play! ¨Rags to riches¨ doesn´t exist work goes into becoming successful¨

Bird

The truth is there is no way to know if someone will win the lottery ultimately leading the to what ¨rags to riches¨ is. This is one of the only ways people can rise from nothing contradicting the beliefs of Gladwell.

No way

Final Remarks

Lastly, for the most parts I agree with Gladwell´s argument. He does not believe in ¨rags to riches¨ but there is a small chance that a miracle could prove him wrong. Most people do not become successful overnight, but society could prove to be unpredictable.
