What are single-use plastics?

  • Single-use plastics, or disposable plastics, are used only once before they are thrown away or recycled
  • These items are things like plastic bags, straws, coffee stirrers and water bottles and most food packaging.

  • Sea-turtles get tangled in nets and are found dead with plastic bags in their stomach.
  • Plastic is found in more than 90% of the worlds sea birds
  • Its predicted that by 2050 there will be more plastic in the worlds oceans that there is fish in the sea.
  • Plastic toxins in dumps and litter can leak into the groundwater which people drink every day.

  • Wind can blow plastics onto the streets. It can get stuck in trees, fences, traffic lights and other things.
  • An animal can eat this plastic and it can get clogged it its stomach while poisoning the animal with toxins.
  • Almost 200 different animals are known to eat plastic.
  • It costs millions of dollars every year for cleanup of areas that have plastic toxins.

Starbucks

Starbucks are known for their iconic green straw. But by 2020 they plan to eliminate their straws globally. When they do this they will be reducing more 1 billion straws per year from their stores.

Adidas

Adidas is the largest sportswear manufacturer in Europe and its the second largest in the world. They partnered with Parley. Parley is an organization who raise awareness for the oceans and they collaborate with people or companies to stop the pollution in the sea. Adidas sold a million pairs of shoes made from ocean plastic in 2015. Adidas want to produce all of its products from plastic in the ocean.

Advantages

  • In the medical industry single-use plastics prevent the spread of infection e.g syringes, applicators, drug tests, bandages and wraps.
  • single use plastics keep food and water fresher for longer
  • It is durable
  • It is extremely light-weight

Disadvantages

  • Single-use plastics are not biodegradable
  • It damages ecosystems
  • They are major threat to animals
  • They are made from petroleum which are non renewable source
  • Plastics bags are not more durable than reusable shopping bags

Conclusion

From the information I have collected I've realized that single-use plastics is really damaging the earth. Many animals are dying because of the plastics humans are putting into the oceans. But single-use plastics are important in the medical industry because they prevent the spread of infections.
