Copper Sun

Theme

The theme of Copper Sun is don’t lose hope even when things get dark. Throughout the book Amari and Polly are tested yet they keep on going. Others lose hope, like Besa, but they prevailed. As they made in to the Fort Amari says, "Freedom is not big. Freedom not pretty,’ Amari declared. “But freedom sure does feel good.” Because they never lost hope they got their freedom.

Favorite Character

Polly

Our favorite character was polly, and though she started off as a horrible person, she later grew into accepting, kind and loyal. At first she hated slaves and thought they had it easy, but after meeting Amari and learning about each other she quickly realized that was not the case; they both shared hardships. When Amari was whipped Polly showed character development she said, “All you have to worry about is getting better. I never thought I'd say this, but I miss having you around.” Polly is a static character because she changed throughout the book.

Least favorite character

Least

The character we despise is Perceval. He was a horrible and vile person. He treated slaves as property and ignored his son's existance for most of his life. During a dinner with his son he said, "Well i'll keep my eyes open next time I go to market,” Mr. Derby said. “We best be getting them soon, so they can be broken in by planting time." (143) He was referring to slaves like they were animals. Perceval is a static character because he didnt change throughout the book.

Tone

Copper sun was both hopeful and depressing. There's many sad moments and many happy ones. For example when Amari was on the ship she confided in Afi that she was giving up by saying, "They have taken everyone I love,’ Amari replied, ashamed to look Afi in the face. ‘And tonight they take the only thing I have left that is truly mine. Death would be a relief." This example shows a depressing time in the book. During that scene Afi gives her some hope by saying, "Find the strength within… it is there. You will know when it is time to use that strength as a shield from what they will do to you.” ( 55) While there are depressing tones there is usually a hopeful tone following it.

Symbols

Symbol

The sun and the kente cloth are two symbols used in Copper Sun. The Sun and the Kente cloth represent hope. Afi tells Amari, "Yes, it is beautiful to look at. Remember that when the ugliness overtakes you,” Afi told her. “Find beauty wherever you can, child. It will keep you alive.” The sun rises and falls but it always comes back and is beautiful, and it goes to show that even when times get hard the good always comes back. The Kente Cloth represented hope because it was passed down from generations and is a way for Tidbit to keep his history alive. A reminder to keep going in their honor. Teenie tells him, "“You take this piece of cloth, you hear, boy? Keep it safe, ‘cause all my memories be tucked in it.”

Foreshadowing

Foreshadow

Foreshadowing was used in Copper Sun. Afi at the beginning of the book told Amari, ""Because I see a power in you…. “You know, certain people are chosen to survive. I don’t know why, but you are one of those who must remember the past and tell those yet unborn. You must live.”(pg 37) Amari ended up helping her friends to freedom and lived up to what Afi said.
