Introduction: the Order of Events
When Drafting:
1. Always start with the claim
- You don't know how to hook the reader or what context is necessary until you know what you will be arguing
2. Critical context
- Tell us about the novel
3. The dreaded hook
- Avoid questions
- Fun facts about the novel/author are better
Proper Order:
1. Hook the reader (1-2 sentences)
2. Critical context (3-4 sentences)
- Identify any necessary characters
- Identify setting (where/when)
- Identify any major plot points
3. State your claim (1 sentence)
Conclusion: the Order of Events
When Drafting:
1. Always start with the restated claim
- Pro-Tip: do this part when drafting your original claim
2. Connect to wide world
- Why did we just spend all this time reading this essay? What does this teach us about the bigger world?
3. Speedy-major-points-review
- Identify critical points that need to be restated briefly

1. Restate the claim (1 sentence)
2. Speedy-major-points-review (2-3 sentences)
- And I mean speedy -- just hit the highlights & move on
