American Temperance Society

John Stevens

"Father of American Railroads"

Eli Whitney

1765-1825

The American Temperance Society was founded in Boston in 1826 by Lyman Beecher and Justin Edwards. The ATS united state and local temperance groups during a religious revival and social reform. Thousands of people joined the ATS, using 'moral suasion' to encourage abstinence and self-discipline. The ATS focused particularly on America's Protestant churches. By the 1850s, the movement incorporated individual conversions, political pressure, and legislative measures.

Transforming the Economy

In addition to moving raw resources across the country like coal and iron ore that were needed in industrial production, railroads were also among the biggest users of raw commodities on their own. Thus, as railroads expanded, so did other industries like coal and lumber.

Cult of Domesticity

1820-1860

Horatio Alger

1832-1899

In the 19th century, the Cult of Domesticity, or True Womanhood, governed upper-class and middle-class American women. It emphasized four virtues: domesticity, piety, purity, and submissiveness. This led to restrictions on women's working hours and employment, preventing them from pursuing other professions.

From the American Civil War through the Industrial Age, Horatio Alger had an impact on American culture through his authorhood. His narratives and personas inspired a whole generation of young people all over America and influenced the way they saw life and the workplace.
