THEIR ADVENTURE TROUGH THE HELL STARTED WITH THESE WORDS...
While I was rushing downward to the lowland,
Before mine eyes did one present himself,
Who seemed from long-continued silence hoarse.
When I beheld him in the desert vast,
"Have pity on me," unto him I cried,
"Whiche'er thou art, or shade or real man!"
He answered me: "Not man; man once I was,
And both my parents were of Lombardy,
And Mantuans by country both of them.
'Sub Julio' was I born, though it was late,And lived at Rome under the good Augustus,
During the time of false and lying gods.
A poet was I, and I sang that just
Son of Anchises, who came forth from Troy,
After that Ilion the superb was burned.
But thou, why goest thou back to such annoyance?
Why climb'st thou not the Mount Delectable,
Which is the source and cause of every joy?"
"Now, art thou that Virgilius and that fountain
Which spreads abroad so wide a river of speech?"80
I made response to him with bashful forehead.
"O, of the other poets honour and light,
Avail me the long study and great love
That have impelled me to explore thy volume!
Thou art my master, and my author thou,
Thou art alone the one from whom I took
The beautiful style that has done honour to me.
Behold the beast, for which I have turned back;
Do thou protect me from her, famous Sage,
For she doth make my veins and pulses tremble."
The meeting with the latin poet was accurately prepared like a theatre scene

This said, the gloomy region trembling shook
So terribly, that yet with clammy dews
Fear chills my brow.
CANTO III, vv.130-132, Inferno
(70 BC - 19 BC)
His face is always characterized by a melancholy expression: the sadness of being dead before knowing the message of Christ
"Began the Poet, pallid utterly;(...)
And I, who of his colour was aware,
Said: "How shall I come, if thou art afraid,
Who'rt wont to be a comfort to my fears?"
CANTO IV, vv.14-18, Inferno
Numerous times during the work, reproaches Dante and scols him off when he sees that he is afraid and distracted.
The same complexity is found in Virgil's attitude towards Dante: Fatherly love and solicitude for his duty to guide.
Dante's attitude towards Virgil is an attitude of admiration and respect, trust, devotion and gratitude.
He is always ready to solve the problems and philosophical doubts of Dante:he is a man of great knowledge.
Canto XXVI.

CANTO I.
Dante and Vergil in the Dark Forest.
FIRST REASON
Allegorically Virgil represents "the reason", the lumen that Dante had lost falling in the way of sin (the Dark Forest), thanks to which he will manage to overcome the obstacles to the Florentine poet.
Virgil is placed in limbo, not a place where the most poor sinners reside, only those who have led an exemplary life have not had faith in God (they have not been baptized). In fact Virgil will accompany Dante only in two stages: Hell and purgatory. He cannot go to heaven because it is not a pious soul as it is, Beatrice, the symbol of theology and faith, the only one who can reveal to Dante and to all mankind the mystery of God.

THIRD REASON
Although Virgil is Pagan, in the Aeneid he had been able to transfuse a feeling of sweetness and humanity revealing to be a soul very close to the Christian one.
FOURTH REASON
Virgil in the Middle Ages was regarded as a prophet of Christianity
