Okra in the Columbian Exchange

Origins

Origin

Okra was taken from Africa- Ethiopia and the Mediterranean and east to southwestern Asia. Well to conclude no one really knows the exact location but scientists believed it started with Africa-Ethiopia. It spread to the New World through African slaves sold to farmers in South American countries like Brazil. After slaves introduced the plant to the United States, it became a vital food source for Native Americans.

Examples

-The Americans started to use okra in their soups so it could have a thicken consistensy.

-Farmers were now using okra to feed livestocks and pigs.

The Americans and South American started to incorpate okra in their cultures and methods of farming.

One example on how this item was incorporated into the culture of a new group of people in the 1450-1750 time period is how people in the Americas would mix okra with European vegetables and fish to make a dish called gumbo. This dish is significant between African and American culture.

Example 2: A second example on how this item was incorporated into the culture of a new group of people in the 1450-1750 time period was the braiding of okra seeds into childrens hair in order to provide inheritance to unknown land.

The impact of spread and cultivation

Impact

The spread/cultivation of this item impacted the environment of its new location both negatively and positively. While it provided a new source of food for both animals and people, it also facilitated slavery for the purpose of harvest which ruined many lives, the land of where it is native to, and often resulted in death.

How profitable was okra?

Profit

Okra was highly profitable. Used widely in various cultures, including African, American, and South American.

It became extremely popular in the south due to favorable weather conditions. The crop was one of the plantation agriculture/cash crops brought by the Europeans in the Columbian exchange. Okra, citrus fruits, grapes, and bananas were among the foods introduced by Europeans into the American diet.

Labor practices

Labor Practice

Through the time period of 1450 and 1750 okra was harvested through the use of slaves. This technique of harvest was a major contributor to the spread of okra during what was the slave trade. Okra made its way from West Africa to the United States due to transatlantic slavery.
