Severe weather Project

Fritz Mezger- P.3

Introduction

1

Severe weather is a problem most people face and there are many types, but first. What is severe weather? Severe weather is sort of alike normal weather, but this is classified by weather that has the power to potentially disrupt lives or property and of course, is severe.

Tornadoes

2

Our first type of weather is Tornadoes, But what exactly are they? Tornadoes are violent rotating column of air extending from a thunderstorm to the ground. They can be extremeley dangerous.

#1

How do they form?

First off, we want to know how they form. Tornadoes form when warm, humid air collides with cold, dry air. The denser cold air is pushed over the warm air, usually producing thunderstorms. The warm air rises through the colder air, causing an updraft. This is how tornadoes form

#2

The dangers and how to stay safe in tornadoes.

There are many dangers of tornadoes; luckily, mankind has evolved and came up with a plethora of ways to stay safe. In this part, I will be telling you all the dangers and also how to say safe. First, we will start with the dangers. Tornadoes can bring wind speeds up to 300 miles per hour; these winds can fling debris making it very dangerous. If you would like to stay safe, do research and find out if your area is high risk and find out a place to shelter and make a plan. In the event of a tornado avoid windows and if you are staying in a mobile home, you want to get out of there ASAP as those can be flung up into the air. Your town will most likely have a shelter and if you are caught in one then you can go there. Hopefully these have helped you stay safe and be more informed about tornadoes.

Fun Facts and Pictures

Fun Facts-

1. A tornado is not always visible unless it forms a funnel made up of water droplets, dust, and debris.

2.The average tornado travels 3.5 miles and can last from 10 seconds to more than an hour.

3.The wind speeds of tornadoes are not officially measured, but the most powerful tornadoes are estimated to have gusts stronger than 200 mph.

Thunderstorms

Our second type of severe weather are thunderstorms. Thunderstorms are violent short-lived weather disturbance that is almost always associated with lightning, thunder, dense clouds, heavy rain or hail, and strong gusty winds. Thunderstorms are some of my favorite storms because it can be very cool and pretty. Don't be fooled, they are deadly though.

3

How are they formed?

#1

Tornadoes don't just come out of nowhere! so where do they come from? Well, all thunderstorms need the same ingredients: moisture, unstable air and lift. Moisture usually comes from oceans. Unstable air forms when warm, moist air is near the ground and cold, dry air is above. It pushes unstable air upward, creating a tall thunderstorm cloud.

Dangers and saftey measures

Thunderstorms, like tornadoes can be dangerous in their certain forms but can be easily survived if you do the right thing. Some dangers of Thunderstorms can be lightning, which is an enegry bolt that reaches to the ground; this can set things on fire and many other things. Another danger can be heavy rain and or hail; heavy rain can cause flooding in some cases and hail can damage houses or cars. But, if you stay indoors in thunderstorms you should be safe. Another way to stay safe is to avoid water such as showers or baths because lighting can electricute the pipes that bring you the water, possibly killing you or damaging your house. One last way is to avoid corded phones like landlines because if a powerline is struck it could send a schock to you and kill you

Fun facts-

1. At any time, there are around 2,000 in progress

2.average one is 15 miles wide and lasts 30 minutes

3.There are four types of thunderstorms: single-cell, multi-cell cluster, multi-cell lines and supercells. Supercell thunderstorms are the strongest and most severe.

Winter Storms

4

We all know a good blizzard, but nowadays they are happeing everywhere, texas and even some in saudi arabia. But what are they? Blizzards are dangerous winter storms that are a combination of blowing snow and wind resulting in very low visibilities. I love it when some of them hit the mountains and bring that fresh powder!!

How are they formed?

Winter storms or blizzards can be very dangerous, but first, how are they formed? Blizzards form when low-pressure weather systems combine with geographical features to bring cold northern air into contact with warm and humid southern air. The weather systems have the low pressure at the center. Cold air from the north and warm air from the south rush in toward the low pressure.

Dangers and how to stay safe

#2

While they may be cool, Winter storms can be very dangerous, lets get into some dangers. Wind chill is one of the worst dangers that come with winter storms is wind chill, wind chill is strong winds that can make the temperature feel very cold. Another danger is hypothermia, frostbite, carbon monoxide poisoning and heart attacks from over exertion; all of these can come from the cold. Since Blizzards bring so much snow, they can bury houses and break in roofs. I know this may seem scary, but there are plenty ways to survive this. The first way is to stay indoors and dress warm. Secondly, you want to eat a lot and drink a lot of water. And lastly, keep dry and if you have to go outside, layer up. These are the ways to stay safe and survive blizzards

Fun Facts and Pictures!

Fun Facts-

1. The Storm of the 20th Century took place in March, 1993. It was iconic for it’s hurricane wind force and massive size. And stretched from Canada to mid-America

2.Many blizzards stem from Nor’Easters, which are storms traveling up the east coast of America.

3.The first blizzard to be declared a Federal Emergency was in 1977, affecting upstate New York and Southern Ohio.

In conclusion

All in all, severe weather can be very dangerous and is not to be fooled with. Though it is dangerous if you do the right thing then you will be safe. There are many ways to stay safe and I hope this presentation helped you be more informed and maybe save your life one day.
