On August 13, 1961, The Soviet Union began to build a wall around West Berlin. It was built to stop the flow of immigrants into West Berlin. The Soviets wanted to keep the economy of East Berlin running. The Soviets also wanted the Allies, U.S.A., Great Britain, and France to give up their land in Berlin. However, they just airlifted supplies into West Berlin, which angered the Soviets. From 1961 to 1989, over 6,000 people escaped from East Berlin Berlin To West Berlin. Hundreds of people died trying to get over the wall, however. In the 80’s, the Cold War settled down and the head of East Germany decided to let East Berliners go to West Berlin Berlin In 1989. West and East Germany reunited in 1990.

Diverting a Train

A train driver noticed train tracks that still went through the Berlin Wall. he gathered his family and friends and drove the train into the west.

Using a convertible

Heinz Meixner, with his family ducked low to avoid gunfire in a convertible, drove as fast as he could, and made in to West Berlin.

A Zip Line

Someone trained in archery and found a building overlooking West Berlin. He shot a wire cable over to his brother in west, and made it to West Berlin.

Gerta

I think that Gerta is a dynamic character because in the beginning she isn't brave enough to rebel against the government, but in the end she does rebel.

Fritz

Fritz is a static charcter because he was brave enough to rebel against the government from the start of the story.

Mama

Mama is a dynamic charcter because she is fine with her life in East Berlin until she gets demoted because she won't divorce Papa.

A conflict is a major problem in literature.

The Citizens vs. the government

The government buids a wall to keep their citizens from escaping to the West. Eventually, many citizens, including Gerta and her family, escpae.

Mama vs. Fritz and Gerta

Fritz and Gerta want to escape to the West, but Mama wants to stay in East Berlin. Eventually, Mama agrees with Gerta and Fritz when she gets demoted at her job.

Gerta vs. Anna

Anna is spying on Gerta and knows she is trying to escape. Eventually, she joins Gerta in escaping to West Berlin.

I think that A Night Divided because it keeps you wnting to read more with how exciting it is. I would reccomend this tory for anyone who enjoys fiction, escpecially historical fiction.
