Personality

Garden Heights Starr is very brave and strong. She stands up for herself and does not let anyone bring her down. She is not afraid to tell people what she thinks and give them a hard time. She is not one to shy away from parties and happily embraces colour and family. She is also not afraid to work in the real world and face the challenges life can give.

Williamson Starr is a lot more conservatate and is a lot more careful about her actions. She is careful about her words choices and actions. She does not always stand up for herself and is less likely to engage in "rebellious" activity. She is also less likely to fully embrace herself, family, colour and homelife when at Williamson. She prefers to blend in and be in the background.

Khalil Shooting

Khalil shooting

Starr was convinced to attend one of the biggest parties of the year for Garden Heights and after reluctantly going she ran into her childhood friend Khalil. They got talking, before all of a sudden gun shots went off and they decided to leave the party together.

On their way home Khalil was pulled over by the police for no reason. He was then asked to show his licence, registration and show his hand which he did. When he was asked to leave the vehicle and put his hands on the car as he was doing this in turn to ask Starr if she was alright before “Pow! One. Khalil’s body jerks. Blood splatters from his back. He holds the door to keep himself upright. Pow! Two. Khalil Gasps. Pow! Three. Khalil looks at me, stunned. He falls to the ground.”

Starr was left with her dead friend lying on the street motionless with a gun pointed at her head, waiting until reinforcements to come before leaving the scene in a horrific mental state from the traumatising experience she just encountered.

The night that was supposed to be fun and entertaining turned into Starr's worst night ever with her experiencing some of her lowest lows.

Starr talks to the police

Starr talks to police

Starr and her parents were very reluctant to talk to the police as she did not want people to know she was there when Khalil died. Starr was scared about what could happen in the future and what did happen that night. Starr only agreed to talk to the police after Carlos convinced her too despite her parents not being keen on the idea Starr wanted to do. Despite the trauma Starr is still dealing with she finds the courage to talk to the police in an effort to get justice for Khalil. Despite her sudden wave of courage, when Starr turned up at the station she was overwhelmed with grief and was terrified of what was to come.

They left the police station feeling extremely mad. Not only was Starr forced to relive the worst night of her life, she was also forced to answer questions about herself and her friend instead of the cop who actually killed him.

Starr talking to the police I would say was a turning point for her. She decided she wanted to do something to help Khalil get justice. It was also a low point for her as she was forced to relive some of the worst moments in her life while also sitting in a room while a bunch of police officers accused her friend of causing his own death, which she knew was so not true.

Experience racsim and struggles to get through everyday activities

Experience racism and have probelms code swtiching

Starr tried to forget what happened to Khalili and continue on with her everyday life attending Williamson, hanging out with friends and working with her Dad but everything was becoming harder and harder to do. She started to experience more racism in everyday life and found it harder to continue to separate Garden Heights Starr and Williamson Starr. At school not only did people start to use Khalili's death as a free day of school, her friend also started to participate in racist behaviour and make racist comments. With all this happening at school she struggled not to fight back like Garden Heights Starr would do.

At home people started to discover that Starr was the witness that everyone was talking about and she was there when Khalil died. So not only did people know her secret but they criticised her for not speaking up and getting justice for Khalil. It was not just her that was being punished for being the witness to Khalil's death. Her dad was confronted and questioned by the police for raising his voice at Mr Lewis just because he was balcka and Mr lewis was white. Once the police discovered that he was also related to Starr they continued to harass him and warn him that they would have a close eye on him.

Starr was finding it hard to get through everyday and just wished that she could go back in time and stop kahlil from being shot.

Starr starts to stand up for justice

Starts Standind up

After Starr started to receive immense criticism about not speaking up she decided to do something. She started off small with simply posting twitter posts about who Khalil was when he was a child and he is nothing like what people are saying. Until she then started to do more like speaking up and telling other stories. She participated in a tv interview explaining what happened to khalil and telling his and her side of the story. She got an attorney and spoke to the high court in hope that they would change 115.

Starr was no longer afraid to admit she was with Khalil when he died, she no longer feared what could happen when people knew. She could no longer stay at home trying to forget what happened and pretend life was normal. She would no longer stand for injustice and racism. She was determined to let people hear her story and get justice for khalil and ultimately all coloured people.

Starr had experienced a turning point in her journey; she would no longer accept this injustice and was committed to fixing the cycle of THUG LIFE and wanted her features and the future or those around her to be bright and filled with choices made by them, not their childhood, colour and neighbourhood.

Final decsion, partipation in riots and running from fire

Final decision and riots

After all of the Starr effect to speak up and get Justice for Khalil, justice never occured. Upon Starr hearing that 115 was not going to be charged, Starr was not happy. She wanted to go out into her committee and express her rage and anger like the rest of them. Seven, Starr, Chris and Injured deVante went out to join the riots.

When they got to Magnolia it was chaos, everyone was protesting, screaming, and ruining business. It was not long before the police entered the scene and all hell broke loose to the next level. As they move to the riots on the other side of town they encounter a number of problems but proceed on their mission. At the other riot Starr did not just join the crown but lead the crown screaming that " khalil Lived." Starr did not hesitate to throw the tear gas back at the police when it was thrown in her direction.

After escaping the riots Starr and her accomplices ended up in Big Mac store which was only a safe haven for a matter of minutes before it was up in flames. As Starr had dry snitch earlier in an attempt to get justice for Khalil, King decided to get payback by burning down his store which Starr was in at the time. Likely everyone escaped but Starr definitely experienced a lot of high pressure situations that one night. Despite all Starr went through that night it was definitely one of the high points in her journey apart form when she foudnd out about 115.

The repercussions of Starr Jounrey

Repercussions of Starr jounrey

Starr went through a lot during the book. Not only did her Journey effect her and change her life and beleifs but it also impacts those around her

Effects on Starr

Effects on Starr

During Starr's journey she experienced many lows, highs and turning points in her life. These experiences have led Starr to discover more about herself and who she is. Her beliefs, way of thinking and morals changed because of her experiences. Starr was no longer afraid of the police but instead wanted vengeance on them. She was no longer that girl who didn't stand up for justice. She was no longer afraid to speak but instead only wanted to speak and speak her word, that Khalil lived. She was also able to realise who she is in life and who she wants to be.

Starr's journey allow to grow and establish her beliefs but only because of the effects the journey had. Like when Big Mav talked to Starr about the cycle of crime and poverty, the effect of understanding her life works caused Starr to grow up. When kahili did not receive justice the effect was Starr decided to fully stand up for justice and participate in all riots. Starr's interaction with the police affected her opinion and beliefs regarding law enforcement. Finally, every changing relationship with the friends and family affect her by allowing her to understand that not everyone is going to have the same beliefs as you and treat you the way you deserve to be treated.

Changes in Starr life

Change's in Starr life

Not only did Khalil's death and the journey it took Starr affect her, it changed her. It changed her beliefs and personality but also how she lives her life.

Starr had grown from a shy teenage girl into a strong, young woman who is an activist for racism, police brutality, crime and poverty in her community and other Black communities. She is no longer afraid to speak up and stand up for herself and others. She is also a lot more confident in herself and proud of who she is.

Her life has changed by being exposed to traumatising experiences at such a young age. Moving houses and towns, being involved in riots and fires and so much more.

Ultimate Starr experienced a lot of change in her life including physical changes and mental change in the last few years for better or worse.

Effects on others

Effects on others

As we have seen, Starr 's journey has impacted her life and her beliefs significantly but it has also affected those around her. Some of the people who were affected the most include her family and friends. More specifically her parents, Maya, Hailey and Chris.

Starr's parents have changed on their journey to support Starr by learning more about what their daughter needs from them. As Starr was still young when she experienced khalil death she relied on her parents to help her get through not only the different times of mourning and dealing with the cops but also the good times when she gets some relief and gets to understand her wants and beliefs.

Chris changed during Starr's journey as he was exposed to a lot more than he normally was in his shelter lifestyle. He got to experience what life was like for people of colour and what their community looked like. He also experienced racism and police brutality face on. Apart from being exposed to more I think once the biggest things Chris learnt which changed him was how to be a better person and more supportive boyfriend.

Maya and Hailey changed during Starr's journey as they were forced to face the truth as Starr stranded to grow her confidence and her ability to stand up for herself she started to call her friends out more and more. This resulted in an end of friendship for Hailey and Starr as Starr could no longer deal with all of Hailey's racist comments. Maya on the other hand also grew confidence and the ability to stand up for herself by recognising Starr or her family should not be treated how they were by Hailey and it is not ok to stand by racist behaviour like that.
