Weird Borders In The World

Northwest Angle

Northwest Angle

USA- Canada

It is the only place in the United States outside Alaska that is north of the 49th parallel, which forms the border between the U.S. and Canada

It is located on the northwest area on 'Lake of The Woods'

Why and How?

Why?

`Angle Township was designated as territory of the United States because negotiators of the initial Canada–US border misunderstood the geography of the area.

They thought that the lake was the source of the Mississippi river, when in actuality it was not this like but one due south of this area.

The 1783 Treaty of Paris thus stated that the boundary between U.S. territory and the British possessions to the north would run "...through the Lake of the Woods to the northwestern-most point thereof, and from thence on a due west course to the river Mississippi..."

Fun Facts

  • As of the census of 2010, there were 119 people, 66 households, and 37 families residing in the Angle
  • The Angle can be reached without crossing the international border by crossing the Lake of the Woods by boat when the lake is free of ice, by ice road in the winter or by plane.
  • The town has the last one-room public school in the state.

Belgium–Netherlands Border

Belgium–Netherlands Border

Baarle-Nassau; a municipality located in southern Holland (Netherlands) and northern Belgium. There are 22 Belgian exclaves in the Netherlands and three other pieces on the Dutch-Belgian border. There are also six Dutch exclaves located within the largest Belgian exclave, and one within the second-largest.

How did this happen?

The border's complexity results from numerous medieval treaties, agreements, land-swaps and sales between the Lords of Breda and the Dukes of Brabant.

Agricultural or built environments became constituents of Brabant, while other parts devolved to Breda. These distributions were ratified and clarified as a part of the borderline settlements arrived at during the Treaty of Maastricht in 1843.

Nowadays because of the EU border polices there are no longer any border checks at the Dutch borders with Belgium and Germany

Fun Facts

The city has two phone systems, two police forces, two fire services, Dutch/Belgian churches, Dutch/Belgian addresses and postcodes.

Many establishments and homes are cut off straight through the border and are subsequently located in two countries at the same time

Campione d'italia

Campione d'Italia is a comune in the Lombardy region of Italy and an exclave surrounded by the Swiss canton of Ticino.

It is only 14km or 9mi from the main portion of Italy but is completely surrounded by Switzerland

Campioe d'italia

Italy-Switzerland

How?

Why and How?

This city dates back to Roman times, in the first century BC the Romans founded the garrison town of Campilonum to protect their territories from Helvetii invasions. Later Ticino (where Campione d'italia is) chose to become part of the Swiss Confederation in 1798, the people of Campione chose to remain part of Lombardy. After many petitions to join and leave Italy and Switzerland the city was left in the hands of the Italians in the Italian unification in 1861.

Afghanistan–China border

Afghanistan–China border

The Wakhan Corridor is a narrow strip of territory in northeastern Afghanistan that extends to China and separates Tajikistan from Pakistan. It is aobut 350 km (220 mi) long and 13–65 kilometres (8–40 mi) wide

Why?

Why ?

The border was established between China and Afghanistan in an agreement between the British and the Russians in 1895 as part of the Great Game, although the Chinese and Afghans did not finally agree on the border until 1963.

It is believed that in more recent times, the main pass, Wakhjir Pass, is sometimes used as a low intensity drug smuggling route, and is used to transport opium made in Afghanistan, to China.Afghanistan has asked China on several occasions to open the border in the Wakhan Corridor for economic reasons or as an alternative supply route for fighting the Taliban insurgency.

The Wakhan corridor was originally used for at least a millennium since the Silk Road for trade.

Fun Facts

Wakhan Corridor literally translates to Afghan Corridor.

The mountainous, sparsely populated Wakhan Corridor is the primary habitat in Afghanistan for snow leopards, which are listed as endangered or threatened under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. It is estimated there are only between 100 and 200 snow leopards left in Afghanistan
